Test of different reflective materials for DIY grow space

We've heard this a lot, too, but have never been able to see or measure a catastrophically high light intensity anywhere. While I'm sure it's theoretically possible for it to occur, the chances seem to be very slim as long as one is keeping the material somewhat flat and don't intentionally try...

Test of different reflective materials for DIY grow space

Hi guys! We just made a short video where we test the reflectivity of different materials commonly used in DIY grow spaces. Enjoy!

    L.E.D. Argument Thread For Dummies:)

If you buy a lamp from a good brand that stands behind their products and offers a three-year warranty that covers the whole lamp, like LEDTonic, you'll get a new driver right away, hassle-free. I got the impression we were discussing LED lamps in general? Claiming the warranty from China or...

    L.E.D. Argument Thread For Dummies:)

It isn't nonsense. Although, different parts will obviously have different lifespans. Quality parts will live for long, here is one good example. LEDs will also live very long if the temperatures are reasonable. Obviously, the higher the temperature, the faster they will degrade and possibly...

Can LED drivers be located outside room?

Good advice that is worth mentioning every time! It's easy to forget that a small error can in the worst case burn the whole house down. As mentioned already, use the correct gauge. Longer cables result in voltage drop and larger cables will negate this effect to some extent. Here's a simple...

    Spider Farmer SF7000 insight anybody?

I took a peek over at Amazon, trying to figure out what all the fuzz was about. One thing I noticed right away was that the PPFD map doesn't seem to have any logical patterns at all. The numbers in the blue boxes are mirrored and perfectly matching, while the numbers in the teal boxes are wildly...

Thanks! It's pretty awesome. Yes, we've made it ourselves :-)

Nice :-) Maybe they are trying to mimic the natural season outdoors.

Nice website. What am I supposed to look at?

    L.E.D. Argument Thread For Dummies:)

Looking at their website, the lamp seems to have 2.6 µmol/J efficacy. 250 watts x 2.6 = 650 PPF (µmol/s) 2x4' grow area equals 0.72 m2. 650 PPFD divided by 0.72 m2 = 902 PPFD (µmol/m2/s) average Ligh should be spreading fairly evenly in your grow space at 2'/60cm distance between lamp and...

Spider Farmer SF-4000 vs Vivosun VS-4000

When two lamps seem identical or very similar, there's still a good chance that they aren't. AlboPepper just made a great video about this. The listed µmol/J or PPE, doesn't have to mean much. While it's a bit tedious, count the number of diodes on the lamp and see how many watts each diode...

Tests of different DIY household bulb solutions

Good question! I'm not sure how large area a Lightwave covers and with what intensity, but I'm sure this information can be found online. Four 10w VÄXER at a distance of 60-70cm above canopy could land somewhere around 100 PPFD evenly over your 80x80cm grow space. You don't necessarily need a...

Tests of different DIY household bulb solutions

This video is waaay overdue, but here it is. I want to point out that it is made for growers that have none or very little experience with plant lighting. Either way, I think it displays the relationship between light intensity and distance very clearly, which can otherwise be tricky to...

Tests of different DIY household bulb solutions

It is indeed an impressing fixture. I hope I will be creating something equally fun in the future. I have experimented some with thin metal nets and I must say that they are quite handy to fasten bulbs too. I did find this link where someone has already opened it. Although this is article was...

Tests of different DIY household bulb solutions

If you are actually looking for a fitting flexible led strip that is good for growing, you might want to take a peek over at r/SpaceBuckets, if you haven't. There are some truly nice builds in there as well: That one looks like it could reflect light a lot better than the homemade reflector I...

Tests of different DIY household bulb solutions

Then we would have to start experimenting with intra-canopy lighting, haha. When I compared globe/globeless and also globeless with homemade reflector, I measured the same distance from the diodes, each time. For me, it was interesting to compare how the different setups affect the intensity...

Tests of different DIY household bulb solutions

I admire your approach to this. Yes, it seems to be a bit of catch-22 when comparing different sized and performing bulbs. Indeed, a certain level of intensity is more useful for a grower than a certain height. I have been thinking of what bulbs are the most common ones for growing (9w and 14w...

Tests of different DIY household bulb solutions

I agree it can be tricky to find the most useful height. I'm not sure that each bulb should have its own height. Instead, I think more along the lines that some bulbs should be measured at 2-4", such as 9w CFL and possibly even slightly stronger or weaker CFLs. Maybe a 3-6w LED could also be...

Tests of different DIY household bulb solutions

Don't get me wrong. I just thought 63 lm/w was a strange value to see from a light manufactured by CREE. That is way down and on the same level as CFLs. IKEA's "VÄXER" e27 10w LED with red boost is doing 800 lumens at 10w (stated values, haven't confirmed) with 30 degree lenses on.

Tests of different DIY household bulb solutions

1200lm / 19w = 63 lm/w Sure, it delivers a great PPFD/w in a small area. But the luminous efficacy.... Or am I missing something? I also think it is interesting to look at the $/w or lm/$ or PPFD/$. I found the 9w basics being hard to beat since I bought them in pairs for $2,5/pair. The 14w...
