My Grow Setup and Goals

Grow Setup

  • Grow tent: 4×4 ft
  • Controller: AC Infinity Controller
  • Lighting: 2 × 70W LED lights

Strains

  • 1 × Big Jack feminized photoperiode
  • 3 × Northern Lights feminzed photoperiod

Goal for This Grow

My goal for this grow is to create a multi-grafted mother plant that can support multiple varieties on a single rootstock.

Only two of the Northern Lights plants will be moved into the flowering stage. The remaining plants will be used for the vegetative stage and my grafting experiment.

Growing Medium and Nutrients

I will transplant the plants into a homemade substrate consisting of:

Base Substrate

  • 35% coco coir
  • 35% peat moss
  • 15% perlite
  • 10% worm castings
  • 5% vermiculite
  • 250ml of water for each liter of substrate

Nutrient Amendments

for 1 liter of substrate
  • 4.5 g/L Bionik 6-1-5 (vegetative formula)
  • 0.5 g/L guano 2-9-5
  • 2 g/L Azomite
  • 1.5 g/L wollastonite
  • 1.5 g/L dolomitic lime
  • 0.5 g/L Epsom salt
  • 1.5 g/L mycorrhizae

Additional Products

  • 1 mL/L Rhizotonic
  • 0,5 mL/L Bacillus-based product

Substrate Preparation and Transplanting Plan

I prepared 4 liters of this substrate and placed it in a sealed bucket to rest for one to two weeks before using it for the plants' first vegetative stage.

The first pot, intended to establish the canopy, will have a 1-liter capacity. The plants will then be transplanted into 15-liter pots for the second vegetative stage and flowering.

This substrate is experimental. I already had all the ingredients in stock, so I decided to combine them and test the results.

I’m interested in feedback on the substrate composition, nutrient balance, and overall approach, particularly regarding its suitability for the initial vegetative stage and my grafting experiment.

🌱 Germination Update: My 4 Plants

I wanted to share an update on the germination of my four plants and walk you through the different methods I used to get them started.

🌿 The two plants on the left

I started germinating these seeds in a damp paper towel on October 9. Once the roots emerged, I transferred them into their growing medium on October 13.

The substrate is a mix of pumice, akadama, scoria (pouzzolane), peat moss, and coco coir.

🌱 The two plants on the right

For these two, I tried a different approach. I planted the seeds directly into Jiffy pellets moistened with water and Canna Rhizotonic at a rate of 4 ml per liter of water. They were planted on October 11 and germinated on October 13.

💡 Lighting and early observations

I noticed some stretching in one of the plants (NL2). I’m wondering whether it could be related to hormones or the effects of Rhizotonic, although other factors could also be responsible.

Initially, the light intensity was around 300 PPFD. After the Big Jack developed its second set of true leaves, I moved the light closer and increased the intensity to approximately 450 PPFD.

💧 Watering and nutrients

Yesterday, I watered the plants with Canna Rhizotonic again, including the two plants on the left, to give them a little boost.

So far, no additional nutrients have been introduced. Canna Rhizotonic is the only product I’ve used up to this point.

I’ll keep monitoring their progress to see how the four plants respond to the different germination methods and growing conditions.

In your experience, which germination method tends to give the best results: the paper towel method or Jiffy pellets? 🌱
