I was up and outside just at 1st light headed out to see the girlz....
My fur Missile alerted me to an issue on the patio.
I headed down the stairs and here was a local predator hunting frogs.

Damn near stepped on it.

Cottonmouth.

It was dark and I stepped over or around it.
Then smashed it.
My property is kinda flooded at the moment so they are coming to the higher ground to hunt.
Dangerous things.

The ones you really have to watch out for are the foaming pipe snakes...

They took chunks of it and swallowed them. I never thought they would eat it.
I chopped it up to put in my compost pile.
Nature....

Agree, probably not a cottonmouth. Although we don't have them in my part of Virginia so not sure, it does look a lot like the banded water snakes we do have. Here's a copperhead I escorted off the property a couple weeks ago.

We only have a bunch of different “rattle snakes” over here. Those copperheads are beautiful! but im looking at those eyes and lower jaw.

I have read snakes (not sure if all) have the type of sense of direction and memory to not return to places of distress (spray them with a hose) lol. I have not tested this theory. But I’ll bet if you see an another copperhead it’s not the same one : ) the experts seem to think this is the case.

Our friends grandparents would leave an AM radio on 24/7 in the barn

We actually have Copperheads in MA believe it or not. Very rare, but they are here. I had one in my yard about 20 years ago. My wife was yelling for me to come outside telling me there was a Copperhead. I didn't believe it. I told her it's probably just a milk snake. I went out there and there it was. Even if the colors confuse you, which they really shouldn't, there is no mistaking that pit viper head!

No copperheads on Long Island, we do get an occasional Patriots fan, approach with caution!

There might be more Pat's fans on Long Island than Giants fans!

I usually see 1 or 2 a year around here even though we have a healthy population of eastern king snakes who love to eat other snakes, even venomous ones. Most people kill them on site around here and honestly if it was 20 years ago and my daughter was still running around the yard barefoot I probably would have. Glad I don’t have to, beautiful snake.
