I would like to share my 2019 winter grow with you guys. I try to strive for the easiest/least-stressful processes for me while still putting quality first. I am not as concerned with time or electricity cost. My basement is cool and dry- I keep the thermostat set at 64 and the rh will only vary from 25-40. It is what it is.

4X4 tent with homemade outward-curved side-brace poles. You know what I mean- to keep the sides from sucking in under negative pressure and reducing the square footage.

Lighting:
Germination/seedling- I run a HLG65. I love that little light and so do the plants. It really works well, and for longer than you would think at only 65watts.
Veg- I just purchased and put up a 315CMH conversion kit($200) for my 6"Blockbuster hood and it looks like a winner. This is my first experience with the CMH bulbs but I expect it will do well. I formerly used a 600w MH that I thought was merely mediocre considering it was 600w. We'll see how this goes.
Flowering- 1000w SE Hortilux Hps (super or enhanced, whichever it is). This is overkill in a 4x4 but I am going to try to do a little better job with paying attention to the light-stress and dim it as required. My last grow was my first under the 1000w and I did end up with some crispy leaves but other than that, I see no reason to abandon it. Heat is a benefit here and it grows big buds.

Soil:
I am still running TheRev's 2.0 soil mix and I like it. It does use a shit-ton of different amendments but, once you have them all, it really isn't that hard to keep up with the ones you run out of. I actually really enjoy this aspect of the grow with the research and experimenting of new soil/water/tea additions. This grow will be with a 4th generation re-amended mix. Last spring I sent a used & new sample to LoganLabs to have it evaluated (to see if I had any excesses building up) and it came back looking great.

Water:
I have well water here that is around 140ppm and ph8.3. I use a RO unit that is connected to a timer (set it and forget it) in my utility sink and then I cut that water back to 50ish ppm with the tap water. I don't worry about the ph with the ppm being so low. I usually don't even check it anymore.

Strains:
3x Bogglegum (Bog seeds)
2x Loki Skunk (the Naturefarm)
3X Skunktosis (the Naturefarm -freebies)
2x HolyPunch fem. (Green House seeds)

My best case scenario is for (1) each of the 4 strains.

The first picture is about 10 days ago and the second is today (after the first 18/6hrs cmh). I kept the seedlings under 12/12 lighting for the first 2weeks above ground to hopefully help with early sexing. This does seem to set them back in growth some early-on but I am hoping to avoid up-potting to final containers of any plants that I am unsure of only to end up tossing two weeks later.

I found the soil test results and figured I should include. This current grow is the "used" soil that has been re-amended with the same recipe so it should equate to the "new".

Just be careful if the hood is aircooled. Not sure how true the tech on what they say but aircooling bulbs like DE and CMH directly will lessen the bulb life and cause the ballast to crank the power as the bulb cools. Why most DE/CMH that aircooled are indirect over the actual bulb not directly over or through it. Now if this is true or not can't say.

Thanks, I have read about that too. I removed the glass and don't have it hooked up to the air.

Here are a couple tips for cool basement growing that I figured would be worth mentioning. Getting the containers off the cold concrete floor has improved my results without a doubt. I add a couple inches of foam insulation on the floor underneath the drip tray and then put the entire tent up on a lo-profile pallet I made with some plywood(particle board) and strapping. This lets the air flow underneath the tent and more importantly, prevents a square stain on the basement floor that I was noticing when the tent was sitting right on it. I'm not 100% sure what causes that. It is probably just condensation but I have wondered if the negative pressure in the tent might pull moisture up through the floor? I have seen it with rubber-backed floor mats as well when sitting on the concrete so it must be some sort of condensation type thing.
Anyway, I need every inch of height I can muster but these two things (3") are IMO worthwhile.

Veg update day 38. Not too much to mention except they seem to like the cmh as expected. I still have the light around 40" above the plants.
I have been giving them a little aloe flakes and coconut water powder together and also some Thive.N and a couple ounces of aquarium water together , alternating waterings and always keeping the PPM around 50ish. This is also with my addition of 25% (hot) tap water to the RO water so, these additions are in very small amounts.

Busy day in the basement. Culled some males and up-potted the ladies.
Unfortunately, the Loki-Skunk didn't make the cut. The two I had were both males. I also lost one as a seeding.

I now have 2x Bogglegum, 1x Skunktosis, and 2x Holy Punch ladies (left to right) and 1x Bogglegum male that I will use for some pollen-chucking on a couple lower buds (I'll be transfering it to an isolation chamber in a separate tent soon).

I was thinking that I only wanted 4 plants this time (I ran 6 last year) but you know how it is, very hard not to keep another. This way if one hermies or something, I will still have 4. :-)

I just finished up-potting before lights-out earlier today and they just came back on. I am pleasantly surprised that they seem totally fine with it.
I also half-assedly fimmed them today. I was in a rush to get it done before lights-out.

Happy New Years eve! Hope you all have a bountiful year to come.

Updating the journal in veg. Veg is so boring its like"whats the point" lol
I usually pop beans Nov.1 and flip to flower on Jan.1 but this year I think I will continue in veg for another week or so, I am running a mostly indica hodgepog of strains and, I guess i would rather risk going too long than too short. Hope it's not a mistake. I'm under the 1k HPS now at 75% and it's probably 40" above it (i haven't measured it but it's up all the way anyway).

I have my Bogglegum male in his isolation chamber. Going good.. My wife thinks the chambr is silly and I do wonder if it is even nessesary but it works and I already have it so, I'm using it. The whole idea of it is to be used in the flower tent without knocking up the females but I'll never have room for that so its in my 2x2 seedling tent with a HLG65.

Day 17 of flower update:
Things are going pretty well except I am not yet getting much stretch, especially from the two on the left. These are indica dominant ladies so I may not get much. If that ends up being the case, yield is really going to suck. I should have gone longer in veg. I turned the hps down to 75% a few days ago hoping it might encourage a little stretch but that's probably too little too late. Time will tell.

I just collected the male pollen and threw his ass out into the snowy woods.

Day 40 of flower update:

They are still doing well. Unfortunately the stretch was basically over and they are shorter than I would like but, that's the way it goes. I'll know better next time I run indica-dominant plants and I'll let them veg longer. I think I would like to go back to some sativas though. I do like that stretch (as long as it's not ridiculous lol).

The two (mostly indica) short girls on the left are on 6" risers to help keep the canopy even.
The left front one is the frostiest so far (pict included). The Nature Farm -Skunktosis.

Day 59.
The started taking them down today. The Bogglegum's pistils turned orange over the last few days and then... I noticed some nanners . It doesn't look like any of them open up though. The triches are cloudy with a few ambers mixed in. The nanners are a bummer as I pollinated a couple of the lower branches but now, I don't know if I would want to take the chance with them. Between that and the overall size both this plant and the Skunktosis (coming down next and she is frosty AF), this grow is a bit disappointing but I still enjoyed it and this Bogglegum should still give me a few zips of some tasty herb. I'm learned a bit this grow for sure.

BOG Seeds: Bogglegum.
The second picture is after removing most of the fan leaves. My first attempt at a @MIMedGrower style picture (only a lot smaller lol). I probably didn't do it right but I like it.

Thanks for the compliment on my pics. :-)

Your plant looks awesome!

One thing. Nanners dont “open” they are the inside part of the male flower. If you see one it can already have dropped pollen.

Thanks!
I still have three more plants to take down. Hopefully I'll have time to do one tomorrow evening, pictures will follow.

After that, I don't know but I ordered a pack of Uncle Festers Skunkbud this morning from TheNatureFarm ( a new seed drop) that I am excited to run. ...and I need to be thinking about a fast strain(s) for outdoors this summer :-).

TheNatureFarm: Skunktosis Day 60

This plant was pretty cool to grow as it's frost level is off the charts and, with the contrast of the deep purple color of the leaves, I found it just amazing to look at. It's not all roses though, I think it's very short squat structure and leafy bud type means that it is probably wouldn't be a heavy yielder, even with a longer veg time. TheNatureFarm says she is supposed to smell like old-man breath and I can definitely imagine that when taking a whiff lol. The other thing I found odd, when I was trimming I didn't find her to be all that sticky considering the heavy frost and there was no scissor-hash to speak of. Just weird. Looking forward to seeing how she smokes.

She looks great! And very much like a chocolate diesel s-1 i grew a while back. I cant remember if she was real sticky or not. But i have seen both. I think some plants oils stratify earlier later or not at all just like the extracts can be different. Some trichs seem to have a shell while some are easily burst. My take on it anyway. Nice job on that beautiful plant!

Day 81(11.5 weeks) of flower update:
I took down one of the Holy-Punch's. They are slow finishers (the package they came in says 8-9 weeks). The last one that I have left is still covered with white pistils on top. I always seem to get this frustrating-ending with some strains. I would love to hear from anyone that knows why it happens. I have a feeling it has to do with the fox-tailing that usually occurs with the same strain, that the new growth just continuously throws new pistils?

For the last 3 weeks they have been back under the 315 CMH instead of the hps (which dropped the lux-intensity by 2/3rds) and the hours were dropped to 10on/14off to try and help urge them along. I can't say that it really made any difference.

Anyway, this one was looking done enough...
