Just read your post. Im very familiar with how plants are shown to respond to certain wavelegnths. While I totally agree that 2 plants grown under the same energy, the one with the wavelegnths that are most efficient for photosynthesis.

That being said my own personal theory is that a realativly small percentage of energy is needed to offset that. I theorize that depending on the spectrum being used that number can be as little as 15% all the way up to 40% for extreme spectrums. This is not including anything very far out of the visable range of the spectrum.

I have nothing really to base this on other than my experience and observation.

The fact that for 550 bucks I can get a 1500 hps and bulb that will produce 206,000 lumens. According to my theory you would need somewhere between 150,000 to 175,000 led lumens. I dunno what the cost for that many led panels to produce that amount lumens is but im guessing its more than 550..

it is combination of a wide spectrum at certain peaks in density of distribution that provides the convertible light energy that plants require. If you look at the spectral distribution of LED's compared to varying HPS and MH, or even dual cores, you will find that the peaks from LED's drop off rather quickly as the spectrum changes from one wavelength to another, while the HID lamps do drop off quickly, their slope is more gradual, and their peaks more and higher. LED's Have the high spikes of 450-525 nm, and 600-630, which rate high in terms of PAR, however, LED's bottom out to practically nothing in the 530-600 range. While it was widely believed that cannabis doesn't react much if at all to these wavelengths, this is not true. Cannabis contains pigments in its tissue cells that absorb and convert light in these wavelengths to more usable light energy.
My own hypothesis is that the LED's will perform well, and the flowers they produce will be resinous and enjoyable, but the HID's will provide for larger flowers with a comparable amount of resin glands and cannabinoids, with More smell. I also think that the plants under the LED's will finish faster as a result of faster circadian rhythm adaptions (MHO).
Sure will be interesting to see the results. How are you Bossman, sure has been a while. How did your nute comparison finish up?

My theory on it is that Spectrum does not matter that much. Its all about intensity and I think the bad boy will tear ass here.. The light readings confirmed my suspicions :)

I'm only talkin about the quality of the bud. A better spectrum is more worth than intensity. Soma already tested leds and confirmed that. Anyway i'm always ready to change my mind. so let's see what bossman will do.

Ledgirl I will get the reading at those distances.
I was real impressed with how it did compare to the HID.
The Bad boy amazed me. But to be honest I am also real shocked at how much heat the Bad boy puts out. My HID is vented. But the bad boy has the whole cabinet temps a little high. I am going to work some more ventalatoin into the cabinet.

Hey TLD
hows it going?
I posted the weight, taste, potency and my thoughts on the nute test.
But I ruined the pics. They are saved only as thumbnails.I learnt me a lesson.

Hey nuttso I agree,
Just like in my last test. Bud quality will have a heavier impact on my grading then weight.

What up lost,
And all the other cool peep's.

How many watts is that BadBoy and how is it going to fit in a 2x2 space?

It is a 12 bulb T5 and yes it has a very large foot print.
I built the space so that only 2x2 off it will be on the testers.

Thank you for running this test Bossman. It's too bad the BadBoy was a last minute add-on . . . it probably isn't fair for the BadBoy to be in this. The BadBoy is designed for an area larger than 2'x2'. So, as I understand your setup, you're only using about half the light produced by it. Maybe next time around, if one knows that a BadBoy will be included, the test area should be 2'x4' or 4'x4'. of course, additional LEDs and additional HIDs (or larger wattage) would be used in that test to even things out.

Thanks for posting the vid!

yo boss wassssup..killing it..i love the cab..thats how you manage space for sure!!what is the strain in the flower room that was the tallest, leaning heavy toward sativa, looks like she throws down!!and again love the videos..lol and you girls flip flops,so what do you think will be the outcome..i am saying hid..but that is based off of the speculation i have heard that led grow lights have a long way to go etc. but it will be great for all to see the comparison...Burn

Thanks for all the good vibes.
I do have some sadness to report.
I had mentioned that the bad boy put out a lot of heat.
Well between the day's getting warmer. And the heat from the Bad boy.
My AC took a dump. I have been battling heat this whole weak.
In my veg room I have 1400 watt's of vented HID. The LED and the BAD boy.
I turned off the Bad boy yesterday, And even with the half dead AC the temps stabilized.
I am going to see if the girls bounce back from the heat.(though I doubt it)
Most likely they will be cut down. I will take a new set of clones today.
And will get the AC handled. Unfortunitly The clones wont be ready for 2 weaks.
So during that time I will get a new AC in there.
So this thread is going to be taking a 2 weak pause.
But will be back better and cooler.

Oh yeah and the big sativa girl is the Shark haze tester I am runnong for OJD.

'sorry to hear of the setback Bossman. that's a lot of extra work you didn't sign on for.
on the Badboy, do you think the extra heat is more from the lamps or the ballasts?
are your HID ballasts in your room where the ac also deals with their heat, or are they remote? It's possible to remote the fluorescent ballasts also . . . though it's a lot more wires to run than remoting an HID. and there's a limit as to the distance, without looking it up, I think it's around 20 or 25 feet.

I just switched from a 180 w UFO plus 2 CFL lights to a 400 w HPS and the temps went up 8 to 10 degrees

So there is quite a difference in the heat range for sure

Good luck with the ac battle

They all were rooting very nicely.
When I pulled them the roots on all were so fat. it shocked me. Just proves to me that FF soil needs a lot of perlite added. Much more then they add.

Thank papa,
I touched the bulbs on the Bad boy about 2 minutes after shutting it off. And they were still pretty warm.
Though the heat what a surprise. The foot candles were shocking.

Yes and we push the shit out of them.
My veg room now has 1400 HID watt. Vented of course.
Plus the bad boy and. Well honestly the LED does not even count IMO.
It is so fricken blinding btight but runs cool as hell. If the flowers are good then it really is perfect for closet grow.

Glad to see your back.
I really like this light.
I could picture 1 of my flower rooms with the ceiling solid LEDs.

Lets just toke.
I think all the badgering some of the other members were giving her. May have made her over defensive.
But lets just smoke and forget.

Awesome news Bossman! So far I like the LED panels as well, but will hold judgement until harvest... It would be really cool to have a cab with LED's along the 4 walls and ceiling. :thinking

hahaa... :giggle I'm still on newb setting, viewing Page 7 on my iPhone and laptop...
