I'm seeing a couple of these in my first grow. These are just vegging now.
I'm in soil. Plants are 4 or 5 weeks from bag seed. The potting soil is just miracle grow, but I'm planning on keeping these as mothers. I'm only seeing them in the top new leaves of the 5 week old plant.

So lady bugs or predator mites?

How would you treat them?

Yep! Those are aphids. It's best to spray during vegetation. Flowering complicates pest control. I use AgroMagen GrowSafe, but Capt Jacks is good, too.

Alright. I'm trying the vinegar and water spray. I'm still seeing just a few. Hopefully it they go away!

I’d assume your indoors so you may have different needs. But I try and save Spinosad (Jack’s) applications for when I’m up against the borg (as aphids are MUCH easier to deal with) or if you’re in flower. Spinosad is only supposed to be used a limited number of times during your grow and with aphids (and mites) you need to do repeated spraying to knock back the various insect stages. The Spinosad instructions (I have - Monterey) says no more than 6 times year.

I’m outdoors and this time of year I’ll have a new flying aphid land on my plants every day and start the cycle over. So I’ll put on my readers and check the plants daily for the new arrivals and manual remove them. Then use an oil spray (veg or neem) to smother newly hatched (and ISO to the eggs).

Here’s a home made (cheap) spray per gal
1-2 TBSP soybean oil (.5oz-1oz)
1 TBSP Castile soup - typically 7.5-30 ml./gallon
1 TBSP ISO (.5oz)
2 TBSP Hydrogen peroxide (1oz)
1 Tsp silica (just as an emulsifier)

So the plants aren't real happy after the spray. But I've not seen any more bugs. I'm pretty sure they'll survive.

Do you have any pictures of the plants in their unhappy state?

Here's the 4 of them. Ones looking pretty bad, still, but the rest have started to recover. I've put them into the big room which has better environmentals.
I'm sure a lot of people would have just restarted. I want to learn and if they can be saved, I'll learn from that. It's my first grow, so I'm not expecting a lot.

Gnarly! Even if they don't make it, you're correct... You'll learn a lot. I love your attitude, and that my friend, will take you far!

I'm still not seeing any bugs - ladies not included... I'm thinking I used too strong a vinegar solution. They are recovering. I think.

Vinegar is a pretty potent herbicide if you use it straight and it’s hot out!

I use a vinegar spray to kill weeds in the sidewalk cracks or ants in the kitchen. It’s generally not safe to spray directly on plants. As I’m sure you’ve now figured out. I’d give them a rinse down with water and hopefully they’ll come back around. They’re pretty resistant plants.

Well hopefully they bounce back for you.......wondering why you chose vinegar??Many good growers made great recommendations for much better/safer products. I would say the best thing to learn as a new grower.....slow down, read and fact check before making a decision. Best of luck

I saw it mentioned elsewhere.
They are looking even better today. The ladybugs are spending some time on them as well. I'm hopeful.
I'll pick up some of the other solutions to have on hand.

I can't imagine plants are okay getting hit with something as acidic as vinegar.

So what all should I have on hand to deal with pests? One of the listed above, plus what else? Neem oil? How do we prevent these issues so we don't need those?
