Cant Sleep So I Did Something Useful :d

My dads constantly bugging me for movies/tv shows / music whatever and i always gotta grab his damn usb drive back and forth back and forth well i got tired of that shit this morning when i noticed the usb port on the back of my router ( Internet was down )

So i first tried just pluggin in the HD however i could not map the drive to the network :( so i dicked with a few settings in the router page enabled samba but still no map to the drive :(

So then i said ok maybe the router cant handle ntfs ( Odd right? ) So i plugged in an old FAT Usb stick and sure as shit the router mounted that np did the old school //IP.ADDY and connected right to the drive eazy peazy lemon squezy. So i thought ok i'll reformat the 750gb to fat/exFat and bam i'll be all set.

Well i forgot windows limits FAT file system to around 4 gig so that was a no go.... So at that point i decided to take a break do a dab and finally the internet came back! WOOT!

So i did a quick google search on what the issue is and it seems the firmware i had was from 2012 and was not equipped to handle the NTFS file system mind you this is DD WRT Firmware so its not THAT big of a shock.

Well turns out they tweaked the firmware and released a new version that now supports NTFS cpl mins upgrading the firm ware and BAM i now have a 750 gig networked harddrive and i dont have to move my ass anymore!

Oh, then have I got a project for you! First, you need to wipe the drive of that fucking Windows OS. Fuck Windows. But, if you really really need Windows, then do a dual partition. Make three drives; Windows partition, shared partition, and a Linux partition.

After you've used something like Linux Mint for a while, you'll wipe the drive and get rid of the partitions. :D

What about ftping those files to your dad?

Meh ive ran linux before and while it has its advantages over windows any day.. For my little purpose of life online i kinda prefer my windows... click click click updated :D lol No patching kernals no fuckin with cmd lines.. bleh

As far as ftp i could have setup proftpd thru the router but just went samba share and networked the drive to the 3 pc's in the house.. Speeds max out at like 3mbit but without a switch and wires its not gonna get any better..

Plus i buy a new laptop almost every year so having to re-install linux every year would just be more pain in my ass then its worth.

PLUS my father don't know his ass from a space bar so trying to get him to learn an ftp client would be like trying to get a monkey to fly a F-16 :D

Ubuntu 14.0.4 whatever is pretty damn stable I think I only had to do one sudo apt-get shit I need command and that was for my fans on my old Toshiba Satellite 305. Hell flash even works now. I've had nothing but problems with windows. My genuine windows operating system that came with the laptop was suddenly un genuine and then the really weird shit started happening.


It's great for older computers because the op sys isn't a gigantic bloated pig of memory

Mint Cinnamon isn't like that at all anymore. I believe you can even set it up to do automatic updates like Windows.

We actually bought one a few years ago for my now-deceased mother-in-law. She never used it, but it's so stable you can't even ROOT into it! We sold it. It's a computer, and it's a touchscreen, and it's actually very cool for people who don't do well with computers. Linux-based, so no issues with, well, YOU know. :p

Try Linux Mint Cinnamon, you don't even have to sudo apt-get. Synaptic package manager, and there's also a plain old software manager.


Wanna know what I LOVE about Linux most? Is it that it's FREE? Well, that's one thing. But another is that I've been able to solve my own problems, no matter what they are, all by myself. Why? The knowledge of open source is, well, shared freely. :D

If you've got an older machine without a lot of RAM/HD, consider Damn Small Linux. It's not very GUI, but it works!

You can run a nicely polished yet minimalist GUI such as Fluxbox on top of Damn Small Linux and have a nicely functioning machine.
