I was bored and cruising on craigist and saw a few adds from nurseries and what not that sell soil mixes with all the goodies amended already at prices of 85-120 a yard. I was curious to see if anybody has ever bought and used any if say you gotta run 35 yards of mix or does everyone mix their own??

Not those mixes. I just go to the local landscape supply and get their organic mix. I usually do about 10yds at a time. I do amend myself, not much anymore but I do prefer to do that as I find those prices to be WAY too rich for my blood.

There is a company out in western colorado that will make any mix you want and are even offering canna friendly mixes like Clackamas Coot and SubCool. http://buildasoil.com/

I have no experience or affiliation with them, just thought it was a cool business.

yes, most big growers I know buy the premix, there are a few real popular ones around here that get plants huge with water only. When you are doing 100 yards on a grow it is way easier and more cost effective to buy from the reputable yards. And they deliver anywhere in the hills.

A truck and transfer can do 40 yards at a time so it really is nice.

Freight costs can be a bitch, but being able to receive 80 yards+ a day, priceless. Not to mention you save the wear and tear on your vehicle.

The right trucker & truck usually gets closer to 48-50 yards, depending on your access/material.

you are right, the mix and truck does make a difference for how much the trucks can carry

They sounds OK and if you have the money to burn, would probably be fine. IMO you're better off making your own, or buying cheaper stuff and amending it yourself. But it all comes down to time and money.

It all depends on the amendments used. Oyster shell is still cheap. Things like mycos, kelp, blood meal etc are going thru the roof. And to properly mix up more than a few yards is pretty difficult and quite messy.

That's true, only really viable for small amounts, unless you have heavy machinery at your disposal.

even with the tractors it is super messy, dusty and generally a pain in the ass. I did it one year and even with the tractor it took all day to mix up a few hundred bags of amendments.

There's no way a rig that can carry 80yds would make it onto our property. Possibly the road, but I can't imagine where they'd dump the load. 10yds alone takes up a good bit of space!

You'd be surprised what kind of roads these guys will go down. The load would go in at truck & transfer, so half in truck & half in the transfer. The trucker would drop his transfer somewhere he will be able to go and retrieve it, dump his first load, then go back for his transfer. Here's a video of a truck picking up it's transfer. Pretty sweet if you haven't seen one operate.

They can make it almost anywhere sea, you would be seriously surprised what these trucks can and will do.

Last time I was really surprised was when the tree trimmers got their truck where I wanted it a few weeks ago. The others? They all whine and complain about how tight it is. "Is there someplace I can turn my truck around?" Yeah, at the end of the road. :o
