I like to drink mine in my morning coffee or in some remy in the evening. Mainly just because it is easier as I do not cook much. JK
i think one of the best ways to use BHO is to let it sit in vegtible glycerine for 60 days.
Also remember that heat treated edibles are way stronger. /QUOTE]
Please tell me more!
I have been unable to completely dissolve BHO or HHO, or EHO into glycerin without a precipitant that is about the same specific gravity as the glycerine and extremely difficult to remove.
The precipitant is not tasty and a little bit wrecks the taste of a lot of glycerin. Might I ask how you've solved that problem?
Good point on heat treatment! I put my oil container in a 240/250F oil bath, using an electric fondue pot of canola oil, and cook off the remaining solvents and decarboxylate it at the same time. The last micro bubbles coming off the oil is mostly C02 from the decarboxylation process.
The charts say 70% decarboxylation in 1 hour at 252F, but you can visually tell when it is is ready, because the oil pool gets quiescent (mostly) at that point at that temperature.
The charts also show that after about 70% decarboxylation, more THC is converted to CBN than THCA to THC, so unless high CBN's sedative effect is your goal, mostly is probably a good place to stop.
I usually don't make medibles, because I've seen too many OD on the tasty ones, and have an unpleasant experience.
I have made some tasty and potent lollypops however, by replacing the corn syrup in the hard candy recipe with honey, which is a cannabis menstruum.
Before the BHO cooled down from the above decarboxylation process, I mixed it with its equal weight in Lorann Oils cinnamon candy flavoring oil, which also acts as a menstruum, and then bottle it and set it aside to cool.
The candy recipes call for 300F to reach hard crack stage, so after it reaches that temperature, I remove it from the hot oil bath and allow it to cool to about 220F, at which time I stir in the oil mix and pour it off into lollypop molds.
I actually made those for a patient with a jaw ailment, so she could place the cannabinoids directly over the pain, but it had such an immediate following that I ended up doing variations of that theme and flavor. Lorann Oil has about 82 different flavors.
Whether you make lollypops or not, honey and most cooking oils readily cut BHO. I have used coconut, olive, sesame, sunflower, almond, walnut, canola, avocado, grape seed, etc in formulas and one of those oils can easily replace butter, oil, or other fat in most recipes that are not subsequently going to see temperatures that destroy the properties that you seek.
One other thought, and that is that if you are trying to maintain high THC, you can vacuum de-gas the BHO, instead of using the oil pot, and let the cooking do the decarboxylating.
Here is a graph that I scored from Jump117 on another forum, which shows the effects of different times and temperature:
Might I add a bit more about giving folks unpleasant experiences and recommend that you without fail titrate (hee, hee, hee, someone has to do it) each new batch by sampling to establish one dose, before passing any out to other patients.
When passing them out to other patients, make sure they understand that the effects will lag 45 minutes to an hour and that they should not consume any other forms of cannabis, other medicaions, or most especially alcohol until they experience the effects.
To solve that problem with meds, I use a volunteer panel, with a range of symptoms, as well as a predictable tolerance.
I've found that there is not only about a 3X range of patient tolerance using oil, but it has a heavily skewed curve.
On the light weight side of the curve, I have seen ultra flyweight patients, that far less than the ostensible 1X dose discobulated.
On the high tolerance end of the curve, I have seen patients that required 3X to achieve medicinal effect, have no additional observable or reported effect at 6X.
Bon appetite!
