Howdy.

Short background story: a couple Melonades started flowering early after being put outside (coming from 20/4 cycle) - even had lights up to make sure they get 15 hours of light. Some strains are a little more picky... lesson learned.

Now I had a discussion with a friend of mine and when I entertained the idea of just interrupting the dark cycle for a couple minutes he argued that would 100% stress the plants and cause all kind of problems.
I get where he is coming from with plants herming out etc...but that's more in flower, right? I'm thinking strictly veg (so not the ones which already flipped).

What do you think - is it madness to turn on the lights after dark for a brief moment to keep em in veg? Anyone has some scientific insight?

Thanks for the help!

Some growers use a light cycle known as the gas lantern routine (GLR), where they interrupt the “night” portion of the cycle with an hour or so of light. Never tried it myself but you can google it for specifics.

i've always heard he's correct and you want to veg and flower for consistent hours in each cycle. so pick a veg time, then flip when appropriate.

but i've also heard that if you have essentially a perfect environment then you can easily stress your plant on 1 aspect without harming it. you might slow the plant down a bit because every night it goes "ummm wtf is going on" and problem solves instead of doing its thing. but it wont really harm it if its the only aspect of stress you put her in

I turn the lights on in my flower rooms all the time for 10-15 mins if I need to fill a rez and i wasnt awake if the lights are off. Never have a problem. Just dont leave them on for an hr or something. You will need to keep them on for a while to trick the plant. You can use something like a 60w cfl to keep a 4 x8 flood table in veg. Do that from time to time if I need to keep something in veg for a week like my plants got to big in veg and I need to screen them and wait for them to turn vert again.

You also have to be careful about switching veg times and do it in little steps. Taking, for example, a 24/0 veg plant and throwing it into a 18/6 room sometimes it will flower and then reveg. If you are vegging under 20/4, and want them to stay in veg once you put them in flower, you need to keep close to that. I would usually only go down by 2 hrs of darkness per 5 days or so at a time as a rule of thumb. Just some plants are super picky and might flower anyways or might start to flower with age or if they get rootbound.

Thanks for that reply, that's what my intuition was telling me. There definitely is a wide range on sensitivity depending on the genetics so growers experiences may vary a lot...but there is just too much folklore and anecdotal knowledge around the whole topic - hard to argue with someone who chose to believe what old Jimbob told them, rather then read some papers ;p
I just like to play around and be a bit more wise afterwards...but better still don't do unnecessary experiments that mess up a plant, haha.
Again, thanks for the input.

I’m running 12 on, 5.5 off, 1 on, 5.5 off in veg right now. Growth seems to be slow and I’ve had to interrupt them to flush after over feeding. I’m resetting the light cycle right now so they’re all out in the sun right now and missing their 5.5 hours of sleep.

Ive vegged under 24/0 for years and years with zero issues. Microbes? H202 makes sure they are all murdered with pleasure.
