I defoliated my plants to leave only main tops, and a few secondary tops that are in the top canopy.

Right or wrong depends on what shape you're trying to make. If those were mine, I'd want a plan for how to fill the "donut hole" in each plant's canopy.

I think it looks great the canopy is super even, at least from the pic. Looks like the bud sites are all getting good light exposure, and the bottom will have good airflow. Most importantly you didn't take off every single fan leaf like I've seen so many people do xD

Veg. I just started reducing the light duration recently.

I don't want light hitting the floor after the stretch, so I train with that in mind. I'll typically top the fourth or fifth node, and bring the lowers up through the middle to fill the hole. Lots of ways to grow.

I just peeped your profile lol dang bro your plants are beast! On mine the tops you see are only a little movement they are getting more and more woody as we type lol so I screwed the pooch on these I guess. I threw out all my plants and started over 8 weeks age so this grow is what it is and I hope it amounts to something good cause I just want to harvest my first grow and with ADHD I tend to make stupid decisions and keeping my hands off my plants is impossible lol I will probably end up screwing it completely before it's all said and done smh.......

I think the biggest challenge for most new growers is to avoid over-doing it. They're plants, and they'll do their thing if we stay out of the way. Enough water, enough light, and enough food and they'll thrive. Not too much of anything. Keep em healthy and let them go for a while and they'll fill your tent.

After I top to my desired cola count do I let all nodes grow out after that, keep only the main colas, keep a few at the top, or only remove up to the bottom third of the nodes as if you were lollipoping? This is my first grow and can’t find a definitive answer. Also is manafolding a better method than topping and scroging? I love the aesthetic but it hurts to keep cutting growth back and adding time. Thanks in advance

Frankly speaking, you don't have to top at all to get a decent harvest. That's not saying you shouldn't top a plant. However, the worst reason to top one is because its "what you think you should be doing." Training a plant is more of an art and it takes vision of what you want the mature plant to look like in your space. Topping a plant with no idea what you want your plant to do is a waste. Topping your plant and then moving right to 12/12 is also a waste unless you're operating in a very small space and you need to do it to make it fit.

You've got one part down on the topping though ... top, wait for new growth. Top again and wait longer for more new growth or don't top and move right into flowering. All approaches are right. Your job as the grower is to figure out which approach works best for you.

P.S. Some of the most beautiful mainlined plants out there took 3 months of veg to get to that state. It doesn't happen quickly but for those who grow their plants that way, the only way you would get them to change it is if they needed a quick run to fill up the bud cabinet so its not in danger of running out.

This is my plant so far, I just wanted to go for 8 or 16 mains and maybe scrog to fill my tent out. However, 1. I’m unsure if 16 will be too many because I only have a 3x3. 2. I’m really confused on whether or not I should be keeping the new side branches the main branches will produce and if so how many and do I just leave the tips for bud sites? Because it looks like in most pics people just have the tops of the main colas and just leave fan leaves at every node prior? 3. Do buds only form at the top of branches? In some pics it looks like they grow all down the branches. Sorry for the dumb questions. I did so much research and planning before this, just to get to where I am and realize how little I really know lol. The weed growing rabbit hole is insane

Old man eyes here so bare with me ... It looks to me like you've already got 8 "tops" from the cuts you've made. If you were to follow the same approach and top again, you'll push your colas to 16. Should you do that depends on a few things ... mainly how you are going to support the plant in the space you have. You've already made enough cuts that if you're in a 3 x 3 tent footprint, and some veg time ... you'll fill it up completely.

For now, you're still in veg so you don't have to rush any decisions. Those side branches are what many growers train to fill the "donut hole" in the middle of your mainline. I would concentrate on filling out your canopy at this time. In the future, you will lollipop and do some defoliation. Today? Keep on growing ... I wouldn't personally be thinking about changing the light cycle for at least a few more weeks.

Edit: about bud growth .... each node contribute to the number of buds along the branch. Older nodes may have more secondary branching in their new growth .... but each node translates to at least one flower set along the branch. Usually they grow in pairs, one slightly below the other and on opposite sides of the branch.

So the mains I want I pull close to the walls of my tent and allow secondary branches to fill center? Also I’m not sure if you can tell in the pic above, the bottom inner right fan leaf has a weird growth/mutation sticking out of the center and bottom left inner has a mutated tiny leaf. Is this a sign of poor genetics?
