Your 3 x 3 doesn't give you a full 3 x 3 square to accomplish that in but that has to be your goal. You will run into a point where you'll need to trim some of the side shoots from the secondary growth but again, for now, let it grow and see what you got before you get the scissors out. You still have a lot of time before lollipopping and defoliation and so on.
