Hi,

im using Biobizz and have some magnesium deficiency and I know many use epsom salt I have some canna mono magnesium and would like to know if it is possible to use it instead?

Im asking because BB is organic im not sure if there is a difference between Canna (mgO) or epsom salt(7H20) in regards of the useful bacteria in soil?

First thing I’d check is the ph of your growing medium. If it’s in the recommended range then adding more minerals is fine.

The problem is if your ph is out of range then adding more minerals isn’t going to help. As they won’t be able to absorb them no matter how concentrated they are.

A foliar feeding of an Epsom salt solution will help slow it down some but you really need to make sure your roots can absorb the added nutrients through the root system.

Correct me if i’m wrong guys but i think epsom salts are certified to be used in organic farming, canna product probably not as it is a chemical product.
The difference is epsom has sulfate in it. Magnesium sulfate. But as far as effects on the soil bacteria, i have no idea. Tho it’s a safe bet to go with the one that is suitable for organic farming (again waiting confirmation on this).

That product also contain SO3, but more importantly, and this goes for standard epsom as well, you should really try to get close to a 3:1 ratio of calcium:magnesium. Too much magnesium can upset that balance. One thing I try to hammer in all growers heads is that it's not just having "enough" nutrients, but more importantly it's having the right balance. This is one reason you will see success for growers that don't pump high EC into their soil. If they are using quality nutrients they don't need to overfeed their plants. Personally, I believe a quality product doesn't require additional calcium or magnesium, but if supplementation is needed for some reason, I'd rather have a product that contains calcium and magnesium over magnesium and sulfur.

That product is called “canna mono” and when i did look it up to find the composition of the fertilizer, i see two different compounds. One site reads it is liquid magnesium sulfate and the other only reads MgO which is magnesium oxide. So i am not sure which is true but other than that, i agree with not feeding unnecessarily, i actually just water my plants with a good ammended soil this grow and getting good results. But for example, they tripled in size when i was away for 10 days and that growth brought on lots of deficiencies so they needed a correction. They got their only feeding in this case. Other than that, yeah just leave it be.

Thank you the reason im having deficiency’s and need some extra mag is my tap water and my ca:mag ratio of 10:1 77mg/l ca and 7mg/l mag.

My plan is to add just a little magnesium to my water everytime to balance out the ratio and using liquid is easier so if it is possible I would like to use the canna mono product but I’m still not sure if epsom salt is more organic friendly than canna mono mag ?

Yeah again, as far as i can remember, epsom is certified as suitable to use in organic farming. The other, mono, is chemical so it is probably not. Tho i don’t believe it will do much damage if any, to the microheard, if you have both, i wouldn’t take any chances. I use epsom, when i am having a mag problem, also a bit of sulphur is nice too. Hardly ever had a problem with it.

cana mono magnesium is epsom salt in water.

In some countries, other than the USA, the fertilizer label guaranteed analysis for magnesium, calcium sulfur ect have to be listed as the oxide form. This is similar to the way we list potassium oxide instead of just potassium on our labels in the usa or Phosphorus pentoxide instead of phosphorus.

dont let it confuse you.

so technically its same.... interesting, biobizz told me not to use magnesium from canna they told me to use epsom salt instead. Im not sure but sometimes I think the "experts" from the nutrition companies dont know what they are talking about….Thank you!
