Hi all
I've been growing for many years now soil indoor using a mix of gh and an .I found this site trying to find information on making my own fertilizer as I've heard of it from a few people using calcium nitrate, potassium sulphate, potassium nitrate, mono potassium phosphate, magnesium sulphate and chelated trace minerals . I found the post from "Fatman" but haven't seen much other info ... Is there more info on this stuff ?

using something like jacks 321 simplifies this, just buy their hydro base & cal nitrate & magnesium sulfate & have a 3 part powder nutrient combos, I also bought some mono potassium phosphate to go with my jacks nutrients & it was a waste, the plants do not need it at all, it will just hurt plants by making the K too high of a PPM thus you will get K lockout as jacks already pushed the K value PPM about as far as it can be pushed when using their max mix ratios so MPK is in no way necessary!

If i were making my own i would be going for 0-x-x and control nitro with cal nitrate. In fact its what i do now except i just buy the 0-x-x. Cn is dirt cheap 50lb bags of ferts are pretty cheap and last years.

why? I run 3-1-4 from veg thru flower, every watering & it works way better than any other ratio I have ever used, & especially high P bloom ratios... high P in flower is such nonsense!

I have found over the years different strains have different nitrogen needs. What may be an optimum ratio for one could be excessive or even deficient for another.

I use all salt based nutrients and optimise the n levels for each strain i grow. I start with a general baseline which has performed for me for years. Then as growth progression occurs i may adjust n values by adding or taking away a bit of cal n based on what the plants show me.

well thats the idea with jacks, I have to up the cal nitrate on some but not others, like .2 gram per gallon more, but the base still always has nitrogen in it no matter what even if you use no cal nitrate

A bit of fulvic acid and/or pyroligneous acid (wood vinegar, liquid smoke) will help mitigate having to mix up different batches with such small amounts. Chelation (and CEC with soilless media) lets the plant uptake nutrients as it needs. Right now I'm using Mr. Fulvic and Sausage Maker liquid smoke with great success. The fulvic acid, organic acids and aminos have them stinking even in veg.

Ive done my best work in soil with an organic 1-1-1 all the way through and a little bloom booster in flower.

Thanks for the info . Jack's looks pretty interesting and save a ton of money. I'm in Canada and it doesn't seem that common to find up here. I'm going to make a few calls tomorrow and see what I come up with . Any other Canucks in here and able to source this stuff?

Buying some 35%+ phosphoric acid (ph down in most hydro stores) will make large majority of the nutrients you are looking for. On large scale if you get some pure 70% nitric acid you can make just about anything you would want.

Nitric acid + dolomite lime= calcium nitrate and magnesium nitrate
Nitric acid + steel wool= iron II nitrate
Potassium Carbonate (Potash)+ Phosphoric acid= MonoPotassium Phosphate

Once you learn what reactions create the compounds you are looking for it becomes far easier to make nutrients yourself! Now formulating them into a solid product is where its becomes MUCH harder!

But since most companies give you the % of the compounds they use in their products it makes it pretty simple to reformulate their design!

Learn up on acid/base reactions (basic inorganic chemistry) once you understand that you will pretty much be able to make any fertilizer you want as long as you have the base ingredients available!

Good Luck! Its fun playing mad scientist!

I'm running 4-1-5.5 this round thanks to Manic Botanix (Grant Low). Monster yeilds and cutting back Potassium after week 6 gives a boost in potency with most strains.

1.0 EC in veg. 1.2 EC in flower.

Part A:
Calcium Nitrate (Yara Liva Greenhouse Grade): 299g
Magnesium Nitrate (Haifa Multi-K greenhouse grade): 8g

part B:
Magnesium Sulfate (magriculture MgSO4): 191g
Potassium Sulfate: 90g
Monopotassium Phosphate (Haifa Multi-MKP): 23g
Chelated Micros: 15.3g

Are you using this as a concentrate and adding to res to reach your desired EC? Or how many gallons does this make ?
Thx Chris

Yes. It should usually dissolve in a liter. I had some micros not dissolve, so that is the recipe for 2 quarts of A and B. 12 ml of A and 12 ml of B in a gallon gives 1.0 EC.

If you can't find Jack's check out Masterblend, it's pretty much the same and mixes in a similar manner, good luck

12 ml for every 3.78L in a 100L tank= 317 ml

If you get into mixing fertilizer, you might want to practice your math chops. When you get older, if you don't use it, you lose it.
