Finderz Keeperz?

Heya friends. Gotta couple of questions for ya. Hopefully I can get some good input from a few of ya that others can draw upon as well (before it goes off on a tangent.... LOL) I know there will be a zillion opinions.... as always...

Scenario: Sky did a seed pop looking for some new tastes.... 9 different varieties...mostly fems or S-1's. There are a few plants of each variety...sans one....which only has a single offering and is the only plant here from true M/F seeds.

As a preface....yields are secondary. What I am looking for are the TASTIES. A good kick would also be nice, but taste is the true focus of my search overall.

OK....I'm @ Day 54......right at that point where yer head starts spinnin with "the possibilities" before you.... Is this one of the ones to keep?? Or is it that one? Will the smell increase on this one....does this smell better than that??? (fortunately...cus I got these at the Farm and from good friends....so there is no "WTF IS THIS NANNER SHIT?? goin on)

A few of these are a no-brainer to take forward and have a better look. In some cases, both phenos from the same cross look outstanding...some similar..some different....

and some....I dunno.

So here's my questions..... what do you think? There are a few in here that aren't as fragrant as I had hoped..... how do you decide what you are goin to take forward/what you will cull from the herd???

1. I cull only after harvesting/smoking it
2. I cull from the initial smell/yield impression >right out of the gate< from seed. If she doesn't smell now...experience has shown me she will never smell or taste.
3. I only cull only after the first run of clones
4. Something else (details, please)

I kinda go with #2. Though I admit that I have been wrong more times than I can count...however not often with this type of thing. But I have been dead WRONG about culling early. It is best advised to hold onto them all right up until smoke test. I take the 4 bottom most branches clone them at 1st 2nd week of flower so I am not holing on to these things forever. And the beauty is if they turn out to be something you have already got them to a good size.
We cull ALL plants showing intersex, hermaphroditic, traits. Well almost all. The exceptions we can make, for our situation, consist of samenate flowers showing late, 7-8 weeks when present. That for us is only less than ideal. You say o\you are looking for tasties, you will know right off. If it has the traits your looking for you should know within the first 4 weeks of flower. There are of course exceptions to the rule but if you can tell by now you should make note and compare to final selection. You know for the next time you get bored and need some new flava.

Yeah....I'm "holding" clones..fer sure. Everything is about 10-12" tall... and sitting on the brink

Kinda go with #2 myself as well. I have a BB cut I've kept for the taste for a few years now and she starts showing her stinky/tasty self at about a month in....

If growing from seed I look a lot at the general structure. I always clone off every plant. My general basis has yet to be wrong at around 8 weeks I can usually tell what one will be the keeper but I do tend to keep the best two. I'll run those two again from clone to compare the differences. Yield is important but not my #1 aspect to a keeper. Smell and power are more important as long as the yield isn't absolute shit

I'm considering a slightly different approach due to space limitations. I'd love to hear what folks think.

Rather than taking clones and sending those into flower, I'd like to send the plants started from seed into flower after taking clones, in order to save space in my mother tent.

Any problems with going this route?

I bloom from original seed all the time. In fact I'm doing it currently with my fruity pebble, lemon aliendawg, and a few other varieties.

The first run off seed is hard to tell how the plant will grow from clone though. Iv had phenos from seed that kicked ass but then the clones grew like shit....anD even sometimes the opposite. ~Smf~

I used to lean towards number 2 but number 1 is the safest, best bet as with a 10 weeker, sometimes the last 2 weeks can make a huge difference. But my answer is a blend of those you offered, really have to smoke it to tell, imo

Well I certainly made it hard on myself by starting 8 varieties at once and by planting multiples of each. LOL. Holy crap......
And then there's the clones. Everyone is represented except one stubborn Neville's Haze Hybrid...and some...such as your BSOG, baba....have more than one clone hanging about....

and there's where it gets tough.....and the space limitations come into play.

And yes...where the decisions need to be made...

fun stuff.....but it would have been much easier and far less of a crap shoot to just beg for clones somewhere..... LOFL....

I hear you, that is a lot of variety, gonna have to take notes when you smoke all those kinds...lol
But it'll be fun testing new smokes!

i do the same thing but i wish i didnt. it would be a lot better to save the mother that came from seed and not clone. mothers from seed are always better then mothers from clone but i dont think its that much of a difference, sure they might clone better and have more vigor etc etc but i cant imagine it being a huge difference.

i dont have the space and time to flower the clone and keep the mother from seed.. by the time that clone flowers out and finishes those mothers from seed are gonna be huge and hard to handle, especially sativas.

so i just clone everything as soon as they have enough growth to take clones and then throw them in flower to see what im working with.. i dont have the patience to wait 6 months to see the seed finally in flower. i wanna see it in flower asap haha. and then i throw out all the clones that werent keepers and mother out the clone that was a keeper. now if i didnt have 300 plants and 50 different strains it would be different. people are always telling me to flower the clone and mother from seed but i just cant. maybe one day ill figure it out.

heres my take...

Though I can usually spot "keeper'ish" plants before end of cycle, i've learned not to cull any clones until after the bud is dried/cured. Ive had some relatively non smelling plants during grow, cure into some amazing ass smells (my White OG cut- smells like nothin in bloom but dries like cake batter and OG). On the same note doing that has helped me show myself that many i thought were pure keepers just didn't dry/cure out how i had hoped.

When I have a stack of clones, i just make sure there is 1 very healthy potential new mom and the rest get culled unless she looks that stellar and the extras get saved for another test run.

If they clone like shit, they get culled. If the clone changes dramatically in structure, they get culled. If they are more finicky than the original seed plant, they get culled cuz in my opinion thats you first look at sustainability of the clone for future generations.

It's funny...I've done this many times....but damn near everytime I pop seeds and grow em out I get that "doubt" thing creeping in as they start to finish up...

one of these days someone is gonna show up that just CANNOT be ignored.....

at least that's what I keep telling myself...pop after pop....comin up short with no keepers...

a couple in this run may hold promise....but we shall see...

Ya i agree it will happen. Thats the Stardawg for me and a few old phenos of Candy Kush nd King D...but seems my dumbass lost them. lol. funny how that works.
