About six hours shoveling shit, made a bit of progress. Kids helped me for about five minutes, can’t find good help anymore.

Bonus, got some what look like red wrigglers in the mix. (I think? Please correct me if I’m wrong lol)

All caught up in this I haven’t even talked to my plants today.

They look fine to me. But i gotta question with the leaf & horse poop mix. Are those eucalyptus leaves? Aren't they really oily?

Yes yes yes. I keep hearing that they’re already decomposing and pretty dry so I’m hoping for the best.

Doesn’t matter what zone you’re in! You look at your temperature and you look at your humidity and you make adjustments according to that nine be on the East Coast isn’t gonna quite be the same as nine be on the West Coast! I don’t care what the USDA says! And you look at the average humidity and the average temperatures throughout the summer and determine how much is perlite to add to your soil! Humid add a bunch, dry, not so much! But you need good dry wet cycles no matter where you’re at!

Garden zoning is based on the lowest average temperature anyways. Upper end of the theomometer doesn't change your "zone"

I’ve learned lol just thought it was a good way to get a base line. I’m just pretending I know what I’m doing

The only way to learn is to try. The unfortunate/fortunate thing about gardening is there is no one way to do it. Uncle Google is a wealth of knowledge, my advice is to pick a method and stick to it.

Read through your grow diary in its entirety about a month ago. Couldn't remember your username and didn't click the 👁 to watch the post. Glad to see you and the plants have pulled through.

Wanted to attached this article for you though. I know you are aware now about the eucalyptus, but here is the science. It can act as a herbicide, much like the black walnut I have on my property.

You’re learning, Cibrian! It’s not actually knowing what you’re doing! It’s creating the illusion that you know what you’re doing!

The color and banding looks mostly right. so does their location and what theyre doing.

Red wigglers only get about 3-4 inches long, and tend to hang out in partially composted leaves here. And they do like to bundle up together like that, especially when its dry. They dont like being in actual dirt, and when they are, usually the top inch or two.

When stressed they also release a fowl smelling yellow liquid as a defense mechanism that most other worms dont do. (they might not do this when super dry, idk)

If they confirm all of these things, then you got some damn good trout bait on your hands. They'll outfish canadian nightcrawlers with trout and panfish like 5 to 1, and they are fantastic to have in compost piles if theres high leaf or yard scrap volume.

Thanks for the support! I think they’re gonna make it as long as I stay out of the way.

I tried to read that and it’s a bit beyond me lol. I did read last night about how the trees in a sense fight each other for survival, and one of their tools is that their falling leaves prevent anything else from growing around them. I swear I’m not crazy lol.

This is truth, most evergreen trees do this through either their needles falling or by starving the ground around them of moisture and light. Plants are far more "intelligent" than often credited with. One of my favourite documentaries in the planet earth series the plant disc, its insanely interesting

The science article was letting you know the compounds that act as herbicide.

This is more severe than other trees though, much like the black walnut.

Here is a gardener's blog from Cali.

It seems like if the eucalyptus tree is dead (they killed roots in the example), you don't need to worry as much (which isn't the case with black walnut as it take the soil awhile to rid itself of the toxins). I'm sharing this because you may be fine with the dead leaves being included in your compost mix (wouldn't use them again), but if you have these trees on your property, be mindful, even for your regular veggie gardens.

It also helps others in the future that may read the thread.

You're welcome. And don't seem to be any more or less insane than all of us.

Eucalyptus Trees and Vegetable Gardening | Under the Solano Sun

Over the last several years, my wife and I have been setting up a raised bed garden on the west side of our home. There are about 10 Eucalyptus trees on the west edge of the garden that provides some shade from the very hot late afternoon sun. These trees are about 35 years old and well established.
