This is my first legit grow and first time trying the scrog method. Its an unknown photo strain in an 18 gal tote under a 650w led in a 4x4 tent. Vegged for right around 12 weeks while i let an auto i started at the same time finish up. Things are going well but I'm always looking for ways to improve. I put the net up and flipped to flower about two weeks ago. I trimmed most of the leaves and sucker branches beneath the net. Thinking about defoliating next week some time but I'm not sure yet. Any advice you could all give is appreciated!

You don’t need any. Beautiful canopy!! Agree with your thought process that the defoliation could be helpful. Only remove what’s not above the scrog.

Thanks! I've read a lot about a major defoliation in week three of flower but I'm hesitant to cut much off. I plan on cleaning up the lower part, but in your experience is there really a benefit to taking a bunch of the big fans off the top and middle for better light penetration?

I prefer to push them down. I’m a firm believer that fan leaves are the most important energy resource the plant has. The are also a source of food towards the end of flower. Plants will canibalize the fans stored nutrients. There are arguments that support both concepts. If you don’t know what you are doing, you can really stress the ladies with a heavy defoliation. I’m in for your show!!

Thanks for the input! This is more along my line of thinking, I've just been tempted to do a heavy defoliation because of some crazy results I've seen from other growers. I think I'll stick to removing lower growth and probably a few fans here and there that are really blocking light from other bud sites. I'm excited to see how this plant turns out!

Update on the grow! About five weeks into flower now and she's really stacking up nicely. I did take a few fans from the canopy in some overcrowded spots, but mostly left her alone. She's taking 4 gallons every 2 or 3 days along with ff big bloom and tiger bloom once a week.

Thanks! I have plans to fill the tent with autos on my next run, but I kind of want to keep this strain around being that it's turned out so well so far. Does anyone have experience taking clones in flower? Is it worth it or should I just start with a clean slate?

Looks great. I remove any fan leaf that is not getting direct light. It aids in keeping the humidity down during late flower and lets the light penetrate deeper for the lower half of each bud. Nothing worse than having only half a bud hard and plump.

Nothing TOO severe, I always leave the top fan leaves on.

Very nice attempt at scrogging. I learned to grow using a scrog. It can be a very productive method if done correctly.

Timing and plant numbers are the biggest things in scrogs. If you don't manage the plants and flip at the right time you risk a total mess.

There's another approach to scrogs. It's called a floater scrog. I save time with no vegging into the screen and each plant gets its own floater to cover a 2x2 space. This keeps the plants mobile. If I need to move them I can.

Here lately I've been trying some floaters on autos and it's working fine.

If your curious I have some examples in my thread. Not been here to long so no much in there yet but I'm getting there.

I really like the idea of keeping the plants mobile while still utilizing a screen. I'll definitely be checking out your thread. Thanks!

I kinda have a similar prob....where I just keep raising the net and letting them run.....but at one point that net should be in place. Does one just keep raising it with the lights, or take a stance and "set it n forget it"?

This is my first proper photo grow and trying to figure out the balance of light intensity vs plant height vs finish hieght.....it's still a mystery for this guy, lol

This time around i used lst for the first 12 weeks of this plant's life, then set the net as low as i could and spread it out to fill the tent, and switched to 12/12 at the same time. I think it would have been beneficial to set the net earlier while the plant was still in veg, and then add another net when going into flower. Being that this was my first scrog, I definitely don't have all the answers, but that's something I'd change if I could do it again. I think the point of the net is to set it and leave it, not raise it with the plants growth, but there are others with much more experience than I have.

Also, I plan to use some sort of a floating screen that gmonster714 outlined in the post above when doing multiple plants in one tent. You should definitely check out the thread they linked for some ideas.

Try this.

This was in my big room.
May be tricky in a 4x4.

I LST-ed this plant for many extra weeks.
Sour Diesel.

Just under an elbow.

Update! Seven weeks into flower and this thing is really a beautiful beast. The last few weeks have brought out a bunch of purple and it's really fading beautifully. Trichomes are getting cloudy but still a lot of clears. I'm really hoping it finishes up in a week or two so I can move my next run into the tent. Branches are heavy with buds and I've had to tie a few up. I'm planning to harvest the top mature buds first and let the rest finish for another week or so.

Update: I harvested the top buds on dec 18th, and let the rest go one more week. Ended up with 13 oz after dry and trim, and threw at least 3 oz of smaller buds into the trim pile because I was so tired of trimming lol. Now I've got 4+ gal bags of trim to experiment with. Didn't quite get there because i was too lazy to trim the rest up, but I'm still going to call it my first unofficial 1 lb plant. Buds are super dense and they smell really sweet and gassy. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, especially since I pieced together this setup throughout the grow
