I'm one of those beer snobs that thinks every American beer I've tasted lacks quality to compete in the international market. Beer here lacks any artisan style

That's true of pretty much anywhere, even Belgium and Germany. Yes, I've been there.

There are many American exceptions to that rule, dozens probably. I was just drinking some Green Flash West Coast IPA last night, it's one of the best beers in the world for sure. Then there's Rogue, Dogfish Head, etc, etc...

Locally, O'Dells and Great Divide are good breweries. I don't like NB either and for them to claim a Belgian heritage for their beers is really pushing it.

Never tried those.... but I'll have to, thanks for suggesting them

My favorite so far has been a beer I got in Slovakia called Golden Pheasant (Zlatý Bažant).... actually now that I think about it probably the best beer I've had is what is brewed for Octoberfest. Stuff is strong as wine though, like 12 points I think.

(Sorry for straying from the topic...)

from fooled, to the great beer debate lol. who cares were having a respectful adult conversation. now the thread title is really fitting haha.
Odells is the shit! Cut throat porter!!! and their ipa cant remember its name atm.

Im a big ipa fan,and have been for a while. it used to be hard to find more than one, remember? Now days everyone makes atleast 2 lol. and most of em arent that good, or cookie cutter at best. lets just make the bitterest sourest mouth puckering beer we can, cause everyone else does it.( Hell i had a ipa the other day from a reputable colorado brewer, that had the finish of a moleson or milwalkies best. wtf?) That bugs the shit out of me for some reason. well thats my rant lol.

ohio do you know if they sell their leftover brew stuff or give it away like the hops barley and oats and stuff?
Yah they sell their leftover mash, they might even give it to you in exchange for a bottle of premiem liquor, almost all brewing companies will sell their leftover mash as long as you talk to the right people...besides the big dog brewerys.....the mash makes great livestock feed. Or you can eat it straight and have uncontrollable shits for a week. The 2nd is obviosly the best choice lol. Take it easy

Obviosly you drinkin the cheap shit coloradochem........haha Milwalkies beast..pffftttttt........Everyone knows Milwalkies Beast ICE is clearly the connoisseurs choice!o_O Gosh dam! I'm gonna go shotgun 4 of em and go streaking in my house while watching the hair on my nutz grow. haha Take it easy

I dont drink the cheap shit homie, I was mearly using them as a referance, to make a point. i highly doubt i could finish one, let alone shotgun 4. So let me try this again. It had a highly carbonated finish, one that made me think they used the big beer technique of carbonating beer with a co2 blast, instead of the traditional sugar process that builds carbonation naturally. And to further my point i was getting at, that beer made me think they didnt craft the recipe they mearly thru it together because thats whats popular. ipa is one of my favs, and it bums me out to see thrown together ipas out there.
Oh yeah , ridiculing someone because of thier beer choices, then talking about shotgunning beers, and streaking reminds me of college kids.
have a good one buddy:D

Yeah, there a plenty of great microbrews in Colorado. I used to taste them all. If it sucks, you're not looking hard enough.
Plenty of small brewers will give you their waste (spent grains, hops, ect.) for free, it's like oil for bio-diesel, they have to pay to get rid of the shit, so if somebody takes it off their hands for free?
Many a pig has been fortunate for the Colorado micro-boom.

As a guy who's going into science--this gives me hope that some day I'll be able to do my job without giving up my pastime. As it stands now, most of the stuff I'm interested in working on would end up requiring me to drop pretty often.

We need a beer thread. (as I sip on some Coors "piss" Goldies, lol.)

and FYI I , Many years ago I held a blind taste test and used friends who were diehard devoted beer drinkers to one brew. Not one of them could pick out their favorite beer from a host of others. i also did the same with my pipe tobacco friends and they all failed miserably. Can you pick out a Bud, a Coors from a high caliber microbrew? Try it.

Honesty I don't think I could pick out a $5000 bottle of wine from a 8 buck bottle of ripple.

The same may be true for weed connorsoirs who may have trouble picking out their favorite strain of MJ from a line-up. Hey it'd be a cool party game.

kolah, couldn't disagree with you more. I do agree that most carbonated beers all taste pretty much the same but not so with a micro brew. Also wine and connoisseur grade marijuana all, at least for me, have a distinct taste smell and flavor. Thats why we pay more for some strains over the other.

My dad used to say after a couple they all taste the same and there is some truth to that but I don't care how loaded I get I can tell Crown Royal from Jack Black or Absolute from Smirnoff.

I would love to take your pepsi challange especially with wine. Yup, I'm a wino, spend way to much $$$ on the stuff.

Try it some time, putembk, it's interesting. I did miserable on a few of the tests.

I will add that some beers, wines and weed have strong "signature" flavors and tatses but many of them seem to be hard to define out of a line-up. There are a few folks (but it's rare) who have really good nose-buds for sniffing out stuff. Some of these "special" people are hired specifically for big places like Hersheys Chocolate, wineries, gas companies, etc.

Weed may be the hardest to nail down...as a straight Serious Seeds AK47 strain grown outdoors in soil and compared with the same strain grown in hydro with different nutes may be quite different. Also take into account when it was harvested, early or late, as that may change things as well.

I think beer and wine with their stringent recipes are more predictable.

Try it! :)

I did some cool shit. I once put down 6 glasses of beer. All were Budwesier. I asked for them to pick out the Coors. They failed miserably.;)

of course surveys are surveys and take into account that the test subjects..... which were most of my friends...are dumb-fucks like me.

Agreed on the smelling part. I guess I am lucky in that respect. I can smell a mouse fart in the basement. lol Colorado is terrible for sinus problems because of the dry climate and there are a lot of peeps who can't smell well at all and don't know it. You can't taste food properly unless your sense of smell is good. Your mind also will play games on you. If you think you are putting your hand in hot water and it is actually cold, it will take a second or so to tell the difference. Just tried to tell the difference between red and white wine with out knowing which was which and you are right it is hard to tell but as soon as i smelled it I was able to distinguish the difference.

i know one thing for shure, i could tell the diff between an oscars pale and a bud any day of the week blindfolded, and loaded, lol.
Kolah i think there is a beer thread around here some where or used to be atleast. but thats a great idea at any rate.

Good point PB! Much of it is perception based on past experiences. One can even can go as far as triggering emotions just from a scent. And power of suggestion can influence things as well.

Here in arid CO I line my nose daily with olive oil or Burts Bee Wax to keep it moist..and to eliminate nose bleeds. and to smell (and taste) that wonderful aroma of Coors! haha.

I think you have to create a line-up of more than 2 beers to eliminate the 50-50 guess factor. I did these goofy tests before microbrews were around but my guess is that the micros may be more recognizable from the junky beers. dunno. In your case it might be cool to pop up six beers (all different) and have you pick out the Bud and the Oscars Pale.

If I remember correctly the biggest problem I encountered was getting the last beer I tasted off my palate before moving on to the next. Then I wanted to go back and re-taste which really screwed me up. We all got fucking loaded too... so that boggled my "research" results. I noted in my findings that "The study- group was composed of mid-twenty year old drunken rednecks and dumbasses."

And I further noted that " We ran out of testing material much quicker than expected.":

and ended with: "The research was shut down due to a lack of funding."

None of us had jobs.
