I have been growing for years and most of the time germination has been the easiest part. I have been soaking seeds overnight ( using Tap water) then placing them on a damp paper towel place them on top of my fridge approx 80F in a 3 to 5 days it has a nice tap root about .5 inches. And all is good.. Sometimes the seeds crack open and a tiny root barely pokes out and then nothing more happens it just stops . What is the cause of this ? then the root gets a brownish tint and fails. I believe it is contamination and have used diluted hydrogen peroxide on them and it has worked on a few not many. All input is appreciated.

Only seeds i lost was because the paper towel dried. Then i started putting them in zip bags with paper towel, opening them once or twice a day to change air. Paper towel so wet that it leaves a drop in the corner of the zip bag. Only water and no cleaning.
And i like to plant them just before they get .5 inch root.
Works for me in soil.

I do too. I've compensated by buying more than I need and am surprised when a particular variety all pop and grow. Then I have the problem of 'culling' which I hate doing.

I usually soak the seeds in a solution of H2O2 and water for at least 12 hours, then into paper towels. When most of the other seeds have a nice tap root I will go ahead and plant the half open seed but it usually doesn't emerge with the others. I have dug them up and found they have liquefied/rotted inside.

Might be the temperature. I know people use heat mats, but I just fry them that way. And last summer I tried to germinate Auto seeds in July and most did not survive. Please let us know if you find an answer.

FYI, I was shocked and pleased when all the Grape Dragons, and CBD Dragons seed I bought from 7 East Genetics popped within 2 days and survived planting. The Headstrong (free) seeds did not do as well. Oh, and they were regular seeds, not feminized.

How deep do you plant the seeds with tap?

Yes, old, nonviable and corrupted seeds will do it. The most common one I've seen is the shell cracks, a tap looks like it's going to emerge, and then white "plant goo" the same color as a taproots ends up oozing from the seed.

If it pokes a pointed tap root out, ie the clam neck, it should be viable. If you're using a paper towel, make sure it's only damp and not even moist. You should have to wring it to produce a drop of water. If you have precision temperature control, set it to 78 degrees. It's a perfect middle of the road tropical temperature. If you have that and the right moisture, it's the seed... Not you. That's if it cracks and fails. If it won't crack, it could be completely nonviable (Lost core seed moisture or it sat too high), it was stored improperly, or there could be a coat of resin on the seed preventing water from penetrating the shell. This is where nicking or scratching comes into play. You're scraping a small part of the seed shell exterior to remove the resin barrier so moisture can get inside.

Not deep enough, 'cause I have lots of helmet heads. That's okay, I've gotten my assist perfected and don't lose too many anymore.

Actually I think that is was freebies that cracked and then rotted . The latest were royal queens og kush that were packaged not for resale that were given to me. I have seen some that pop in 2 -3 days and never stop growing that really surprised me.

I have read threads where the most messed up reason the seeds failed.
Scented hand towels used as paper towels.
Left on a plate on a entertainment center that turned out to be 96 degrees.

Best one was planted " pot " seeds and got snap dragons from an online retailer. Like how can you not know what a pot seed looks like..
What ? Pot does not have seeds now? Wtf!

When you say not deep enough.
That makes me think you may plant them a little deep..
No need to put more than 2 - 5 mm cover.

And another thing.
I think it's a bad idea to soak seeds in hydrogen peroxide for long.
I don't know much about it but i did some research and i know what it is now.
It's not used for wounds in my country anymore and the science on the use is unsettled even after all these years.
As i understand there is no reason to use it unless there is specific problems i don't know about. Maybe Powdery mildew?

If you absolutely feel you need to use it, then soak for maybe 5 minutes then rinse with water.

Last thing.
When dilleuting for example 3%, then make sure the recipe specifies if the mix is by weight or mass. If not you can end up with 4.5% instead.

Edit: to clarify, 30 ml in 1 liter will give around 4.5%. Not 3% as one should think.
