I used wood pallets around my garden and then wrapped them with chicken wire. So far, so good! definitely more permanent, but if kept small, can be very easily moved to a new location! These creatures are brazen! On the one hand, we are the visitors and it is in fact their domain. But dammit, my plants! I feel like nature is starting to push back. Again, I respect it. But my plants! We have been fighting these woodchucks for 40 years. We have fencing, fox urine, we've tried those ultra sonic machines (they work for inches from the sound, don't bother with them.), bells, all the things. They always get in a little nibble here and there, but in recent years, they've gotten a taste, and it's particularly egregious.
You know, I did that last year and I THINK it may have deterred him/her/it. Course, seeing an old lady in her nightclothes jumping up and down yelling may have spooked them a little. LOLThe wages of not putting up a fence! It doesn’t even have to be permanent! Mine goes up and down every season! Or you could maybe try a hot wire at about woodchuck height! Oh well! Good luck with it!
Yeah, that is a big problem! It’s in all the warnings now! Bring a big tarp. Spread it out. Drive onto it. Then pull it up and secure it! There were signs at the trailhead we used in Sequoia, but we never got chewed up! We were going pretty late in the year though! You’re supposed to kind of diaper your car!I remember being out in the Sierras and going out for a day hike. When we get to the end of the dirt road there’s 6-8 cars of overnighting backpackers and all the cars were wrapped in chicken wire. We’re like WTF? So drive back to a ranger station a couple miles and inquire. “Oh yeah, if you don’t put up the wire the marmots will chew all the rubber hoses, belts, engine mounts, etc. No one knows why.” Not having any chicken wire we left our car at the ranger station and walked back to the trail head.
You’re damn lucky. Those rats only got a few branches! They are infamous for girdling the stalk! Drop that plant like it was gut shot! Mice do it too! And to a lesser extent, rabbits!Rats and squirrels chew car wires, and many manufacturers made the problem worse by switching to a soy based biodegradable wire insulation that is literally edible to them.
ive heard that before, i had a boss once who bought a new range rover and 3 days after getting it , it wouldnt move.. no one could work out why so he called out a mechanic who found that a squirrel had sat on the back axle and chewed through the brake line, so the car disabled itself.Rats and squirrels chew car wires, and many manufacturers made the problem worse by switching to a soy based biodegradable wire insulation that is literally edible to them.
