Not sure why people are recommending ocean forest as it's generally too hot for plants 2-3 weeks and under.curious to what everyone choice is for seed starter media / grow media for seedlings ,
I been using jiffy , then transplant in a couple of weeks to final grow pot in fox farm ocean .

Sunshine #4 or Promix HP both good for seedlings both similar product/source peat+perlite+micos. Great moisture retention same material as jiffy (peat) also what majority of ocean forest is minus amendments that will burn seedlings. Use whichever is cheaper in your region.
Light warrior works but is pricey from my memory.
Starting in Coco works, also coco+perlite go with whatever is cheapest.
Rockwool works as well as Rapid rooter peat based plugs
There's a newer mix I've seen at grow store called Kings Mix by some Humboldt company I was told it's peat+coco+light amendments/Bennie's and also works well for seedlings. I saw that this mix was cheaper than light warrior for similar product. Only thing was it came in a 3.0cu ft. Bag unlike light Warrior which I believe comes in as small as 1cu ft.
I think the Kings Mix ends up being cheaper per cubic foot than light warrior. Similar thing goes for Promix HP and Sunshine #4 they are I want to say 4.0 cu ft. and cost a bit but are a good value for the size. I think you can find sunshine #4 in a 2.0cu ft bag at some home depot's. Hope this helps
Definitely not a myth this was an overwhelmingly common issue with new customers to the hydroponics store I used to work in. It's a well known fact ocean forest is hot. In the last two to three years ocean forest has changed its formula that could be why you have had success. I still would never recommend it for seedlings and in general I wouldn't recommend it as the company no longer has the same standard of quality that it once did. Hence the change in ocean forest formula. I've only heard of this from a well versed distributor can't verify change in recipe but your success would lead me to believe it has changed. I can't count on 2 hands how many new growers killed clones or seedlings by putting them into ocean forest too early. It is a myth that ocean forest is too hot. It just has shitty drainage out of the bag easily ammended with 25% added large perlite.
Grown hundreds of thai/ diesel hybrid seeds from sprout to harvest in it. Over water it and you get problems though.
Also says for seedlings right on the bag. And it is obviously weed specific soil.
Here are some youngins growing in it.

I grow mostly from seed. Dont know what the plants will be like but still never have any soil related nutrient problems that are not my own grower error.

I don't need to waste my time asking a fox farm rep. My former manager who has worked in commercial distribution for 15-20 yrs talks to the reps for me. He is very up to date as it's his job to be.It was overwatering and drainage issues. And i have been using it for 5 years personally and 3 before with my old caregiver from when i moved here.
It has been 100% stable for ec and ph right through every grow. Unless i overfeed or overwater. Then of course i see acidic soil with high ec runoff.
Soil companies always have to find new sources for ammendments and such. Supplies run out.
Everything you say seems like hearsay from the hydro store. Have you ever been in contact with a fox farm rep? I ask my questions at the source first.
I ran car dealerships for many years. I also supplied a lot of smoke. In both industries we teach a very inportant thing.
People have 2 eyes and 2 ears but only one mouth. Use accordingly.
Also some people have 20 years of experience. And some only 1 year. Repeated 20 times.

You'd be the first person in history of ocean forest not to experience an issue with the level of amendments with seedlings and young clones. I used to use it myself never had an issue with over watering and never fed for first 3-4 weeks with OF given that it has ample ammendments. It always has been hot for these situations you won't necessarily get a burn but you certainly aren't going to see optimal growth. You might not notice it.. if they're not burning they grow slower. I've seen plants come to a stand still it's called nutrient lockout.
Cutting with perlite does more than add drainage you're also diminishing the nutrient content per gallon of soil, perlite is inert. Perlite would be the main component that is giving you these results by cutting OF with it you're making it less hot.
does say for seedlings , eh ? should be good from seed to harvest . cut with 25 % perliteDefine “Super”

I suspect the rare hotspot may come from clumps; add the perlite and mix well. For best results don't feed any nutes for 4-6 weeksdoes say for seedlings , eh ? should be good from seed to harvest . cut with 25 % perlite

Actually ocean forest is a peat based potting soil. Anything you put plants in is a growing medium. Growing medium is a term more typically used to describe Rockwool, Hygroton, Coco and anything inert with no organics..Your former manager. Got it.
Dude. There are pallets of OF at stores in towns all over this country. Around here the old farmers have been using it for clones and seedlings for many years.
And i said it is too dense without added large perlite. And obviously there would be less nutrients per sq foot cut 25%.
Ocean forest is a growing medium. Not a water only soil.
Ask your former manager what a growing medium is. ;-)
Cutting with 25% perlite makes OF 25% less hot.. it isn't good for seedlings out of the bag..does say for seedlings , eh ? should be good from seed to harvest . cut with 25 % perlite
It's more than a hot spot when you are cutting the medium by 25% you are reducing it's nutrient content by 25% mixing it would do nothing to reduce "hot spots" it's adding perlite that is lowering the "heat" of the soil. Just try putting cuttings and seedling directly into OF after mixing it well and not adding perlite.I suspect the rare hotspot may come from clumps; add the perlite and mix well. For best results don't feed any nutes for 4-6 weeks
so how old ( leaf sets should the seedings have before being removed from their jiffy and into their final home of O.F. with perlite ?Cutting with 25% perlite makes OF 25% less hot.. it isn't good for seedlings out of the bag..
No fair shaming someone without your own bud porn. Are you a grower or a peeper?Actually ocean forest is a peat based potting soil. Anything you put plants in is a growing medium. Growing medium is a term more typically used to describe Rockwool, Hygroton, Coco and anything inert with no organics..
25% cut is 25% weaker that's why you're not having any issues with seedlings and cuttings it's not just about drainage with OF it's about decreasing the over nutrient content. That's what you're doing with the perlite with the added benefit of aerating the soil.
I looked at your grows dude very basic, the way you talk is like you're an expert.. Just knowing how to grow cannabis and growing it well is another thing. Then growing it well commercially a whole nother beast.
You're from Michigan so the old school heads are also a decade or so behind the commercialized industry here in California, your system is largely modeled after Californias medical laws.. you guys are behind us in every area genetics, growing techniques, legal space, growers per capita. This is the last time I'm going to respond to anything I see with reply from you.
You're combative and you're not open to new information you're lacking in knowledge but appear to think you know it all. I don't need to have a competition, stop arguing with me about stuff you don't really know about them attempting to belittle everything I say. You'd stand to benefit by listening, I could care less if you want to pretend you're the ultimate source of grow knowledge.
From my eyes it appears you're only looking to counter what I say with contradicting information not based in any substance. If you're not going to try and have a rational open minded discussion neither am I. I can talk to others about these topics..

I don’t transplant before the leaves have five fingers, and usually two sets.so how old ( leaf sets should the seedings have before being removed from their jiffy and into their final home of O.F. with perlite ?
