I don't wanna get off on a rant here but I've seen a new growing trend of using coco coir with a soil grow style. Anyone who's grown in coco coir knows how fast it dries out and the damage that can cause to a plant.

If there's anything that works really good, like growing in coco with 3-5 x's fetigations (Note-You never just "water" coco, always with nutes hence the term "fertigation") per DAY we humans will try to find an easier way of doing it.

While there is an easier way and I'll get to an automatic fertigation in the weeks/months to come I'm going to show you how to grow in coconut coir using hydro nutrients and I'm going to accomplish this by recording a 1 gallon grow competition on these pages.

So enjoy and see if this growing style might be for you.

Growing in coconut coir is a type of hydroponics, not soil. You're running nutrient water over the roots several times each and every day.

Today we'll start with starting seeds. Most of us have seen and/or tried the paper towel method. Wet a paper towel, place seed(s) on towel, fold towel over in half covering seeds, place in plastic bag and put in a dark warm place. Check each day, several times a day until roots can be seen then place seed in soil/coir/rock wool or some type of medium.

Doesn't work for me. If it works for you more power to ya. I'm all thumbs and injure the roots so I sow directly into coir (coco or peat depending on how the plant will be grown, coco or soil) in 2-3" peat pots

After a 24 hour soak
in tap water. I've been adding Super Thrive

a vitamin type supplement developed over 80 years ago for aiding transplant shock and promoting plant health. I used it on vegetables for decades, both for transplanting and seed starting so 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water, add seeds, allow to sit 24 hours. Feel free to skip the the Super Thrive.

I use tap water for almost everything with growing. My water is 7.0pH with 220 carbonate hardness and most of that is calcium which is good for plants. Also the chemicals used to disinfect the water, chlorine and ammonia also help to disinfect seed starting and clone water and containers over say bottled water.

For this grow I've water washed a couple small blocks of coconut coir and chosen my 1 gallon cloth pots

Nutrients I use Master Blend

A three part combination. We're still about 2 weeks away from needing any nutes but I added them here as without them there won't be a grow.

I haven't found anything on the market that costs so little yet grows such large and healthy plants and is so versatile. When we get closer to needing the nutes for this grow I'll explain in detail.

I'm entering 2 strains in the aforementioned 1 gallon grow contest, Auto category: Bobby's Widow x Toof Decay, a cross I made a couple years ago and Regular category: S1 seeds of Sarsparilla, GMO x Pure Michigan I made last year. Both regs and autos are Regular seeds meaning they can produce both boys and girls. I'm hoping for girls but I've started enough seeds of the auto to make a few more seeds which is the plan.

That's it for our first day. Tomorrow the seeds that look good will get buried and then the 3+ day wait begins to see which seedlings will be in the competition.

It's been 24 hours and all but 2 seeds have sunk

Hard to see at this angle. I removed the 2 offenders.

The 5 Sarsparilla's

13 Autos

I make a half inch deep hole with a pen. My eyesight is getting bad so to make sure I get the seed where it needs to be I place them on top of coir near the hole and then move it in with the pen.

I've added a bit of the Super Thrive water to both pans and will have to check and keep adding water as needed for the next several days. We want the coir constantly wet from here on out. If these dry up the seeds will die.

I do not expect anything to happen until Thursday or Friday so now we wait.

I plant the whole peat pot or single egg crate into the pot so it's very gentle and never lost a seedling yet

I also usually start them off in solo cups and I have transplanted into pots with no problems as I allow the plants time to fill the cup with roots. It's much easier to transplant that way and the soil, or coco coir in this case doesn't fall apart and that's usually the problem with transplanting any plant.

The autos I'm growing will get the same treatment as all my plants get, from transplanting to nutrients. If I see any plants suffering I'll adjust as needed

When I was working with these and a couple other strains I didn't do anything special, same 'ol program and they never flinched so I haven't found autos, at least these several strains of autos I've worked with to be any different in growing as opposed to regulars.

Sarsaparilla. #2

Nothing from the autos yet

I've kept the containers covered at night the past few days to protect against slugs/snails, mice/rats and even birds. I've lost many a grow to those creatures and know I have to take precautions. Once potted I'll add a copper wire around their stem for the slimy pests and keep them in the greenhouse where I have an electronic Rodent repellent.

For basic care I'll keep the coco coir wet using just tap water for the next 4-6 days and transplant into a solo cup

that will promote very fast growth and root development and after 3-4 weeks it will then go into the 1 gallon fiber pot.

Next week I'll introduce a very weak nutrient mix to start the process.

So glad I found this! Now I know where to refer growers having issues in coco!

Glad to see you sharing about Master Blend, we both started using it at about the same time, and 5 years down the road we both still swear by it, it's great stuff! Following along, best wishes!

2 more Sarsparilla

and looks like 4 autos

are breaking the surface. Excited about the autos, it's been a couple years and they are fun and quick. I expect these to be 90+/- days.

Potted the little ones

Watered until runoff to settle seedlings into the cups. They'll stay on the patio today in the shade and kept moist. Tonight I'll have to find a spot in the greenhouse. I have no idea where

Plumber- I have a question
If I would like to sprout in coco in final pot do I have to moist all that coco that I am putting into the pot like I do with soil or just fill it from bag (I have bagged buffered one) and start to water that pot frequently with small amounts around growing seedling?
I am scared that I will kill seedling in coco coir- I have few on my account
How often you water those solo cups? every day?

and thanks for putting up this thread- just in time for me to learn

When I first started in coco I would fill a 3 gallon bucket about 3/4 full with coir, add water calcium and magnesium to rinse the coir of salt and to fill the cation exchange sites on the coir. I've found this isn't necessary. If unsure of the saltiness of the coir I would recommend rinsing in water before use but otherwise I use it dry and then saturate it with water for seedlings and nute water for older plants during an up potting.

My next post here will be later today and will cover the nutrients I use, how I use them and the first fertigation of the 1 week old seedlings.

Since they popped they've only gotten water and I'm only keeping the coco coir moist, not running water through the pot 4-5 x's a day as I will start doing today with a very weak nute mix.

The first week the seedlings need nothing but water and air. Coco coir lends itself well to seed starting due to the fack it allows more air to circulate within the medium, much better than soil. They're all set, but after that first 7-10 days we need to start introducing a weak mix to fill the cation exchange sites on the coir and allow the plant to take what it needs for strong fast growth.

The first 2 weeks in coco are still pretty slow and comparable to soil. Once the coco coir is conditioned and the plant produces an abundance of roots is when we'll see an exceptional growth rate that growing in coconut coir is known for and the reason I've been able to grow large plants in small containers.

It's 8:20am here and I've got to mix about 2 dozen gallons of water so I can start the fertigations at 10am, 12noon, 2pm, 4pm and 6ish today. I'll be mixing water twice more today as I don't have enough 1 gallon jugs for an entire day.

I'm really glad you and several others are interested in this grow style. While it is a lot of work by hand by the end of this grow I should have the pumps and drip system working so the daily fertigations are automated and then it's a matter of keeping the 55 gallon drums full of nutrient water

Master Blend
Part one MB

Part 2 Epsom salts

Part 3 Calcium

I keep the ferts in the garage inside a plastic bin with lid along with the scale. Greenhouse is too humid for any of powdered ferts or electronics.

To make a gallon of concentrate mix each in its own plastic 1 gallon container.

I place a quart of each into bottles

and use a 1/2 cup (apple sauce or fruit cup to the line below the rim) and the solo shot glass

The first line from the bottom is 1 tablespoon, first line from top is 3 tablespoons and a full glass is 4 tablespoons or 1/4 cup or half strength.

Full strength is 1/2 cup of each.

Full strength means recommended for tomatoes. I've learned that a concentrated 1/4 cup of each nutrient in 1 gallon of water works just fine for growing cannabis but to show the full effect I'll up to full strength in about 4-5 weeks.

For our plants first fertigation 1 tablespoon of each, always mixed in the order on their bottles or you will lockout nutrients. Always 1 2 & then 3 but first fill a 1 gallon container (I use milk jugs) about 3/4 full then add the nutes and add any more water to make 1 gallon.

The first couple of weeks I want a good 20-30% or more of the fertigated water to run out of the bottom of their pots, in this case solo cups. Add the water slowly, being careful not to disturb the roots.

Make a schedule to fertigate the plants 3 or more times a day. Mine are in a greenhouse that is usually 10+F hotter then outside which is pretty hot this time of year so I have to fertigate 4 or more times a day.

My current schedule is 10am, 12 noon, 2pm, 4pm and 6ish. I do miss the 6ish from time to time but I'll be adding 8am for these little ones to show the growth rate that can be achieved with this grow method.

I'll update weekly at least from here on out and answer any questions I see. If i didn't explain anything well or have any questions please ask

4 days latter and not much change

The auto breeding group

At this point this grow style doesn't seem to be any better then any other and maybe a bit worse then some while the plants grow their feet (roots) under them while we wait

3 weeks at 1 tablespoon per gallon of each of the 3 parts of nutrients

A little washed out in color due to the LED's but doing real well and time to up the percentage from 1 to 3 tablespoons of each per gallon.

That Sarsparilla is starting to show some grit. Maybe some True Grit

My hero. Met Ethan some 20 years ago. Duke bronze statues all over the place and dumb fuck me asks Ethan Wayne in Newport Beach, CA, "So, how did you know the Duke?" Fuck me but I did get the account for George Brazil Plumbing back in the day

Here we go I'm gonna give them all another week before transplant into half gallon pots. You won't believe how big they'll get in the next month if you can commit to 4 x's a day fertigation.

Tomorrow, 9-30-24 begins 3 Tablespoons per gallon of the 3 components of Master Blend hydro growing.

Hang on, the really good part is gonna happen very soon

Boy or girl this one is gonna be something to watch

And here we go

Life (work really) has gotten in the way of me keeping up posting here but plants are doing well. The Sarsparilla

Over 2' tall still in a solo cup. I hope to transplant onto a half gallon this morning. The auto

Bobby's Bad Tooth male and the 2 girls I'll keep in the solos.

They've been getting an average of 3x's a day fetigation and all are growing well.

I've never grown plants quicker or easier and love growing hydroponically in coconut coir
