I've been thinking about this post as I've been growing in coco 6+ years now and have gotten lazy. I use to wash and condition all new coco - this one

I'm using these days and instead of just plain tap to fluff I used nute water and added used coco to get the nitrifying bacteria into the new coco

Honestly not a big deal but that's got to effect growth speed so I'm changing up a bit. I'm still not willing to rinse the coco as you lose some of the coco peat but soaking in 3/4 strength Master Blend and adding the bacteria should be the bomb.

what is master blend and what kind of bacteria products do you use?

Canna coco bricks are good. It is the same thing as their bagged non brick stuff. Pre washed and buffered. Just add water to them and fluff it up. You can get cheaper bricks but you may have to screen, wash salts out and buffer with cal mag.

The trick that grower is using isn't a bacteria product, it's like how you make sourdough bread by using a little bit of existing sourdough bread. The older coco has the microbes in it so some old gets mixed with new and it populates the new medium. You can buy stuff like Recharge or Great White but you can also do a microbe tea with just compost, or borrow some medium where it's already populated and move a little to a supply of fresh food.
