Is it wrong that I’m grumpy about having to put in thought about what the inoculates might do to my sterile perfectly aerated happy place?

Internet rumours can destroy us!
I just called Promix head office and they assured me our everyday products are not being discontinued. There is currently a shortage of vermiculite, so they had to switch to perlite, which is my preference anyway, lol! That’s it!

To be clear, I called from Canada so it may be different in the states, but I expect the rep would have clarified if it was discontinued in one country and not the other. I inquired specifically about pro mix HP and BX in 32 ft.³ bales.

Incidentally, here in Ontario they are available at grow stores and most of the big box stores including Canadian Tire, and price ranges roughly $50-$60 Canadian plus tax. Home Depot now closes their garden centre for the winter so they technically discontinue the product within their system, but that’s why it doesn’t appear in a search until spring.
Shipping would be expensive anywhere as these things way over 60 pounds. For reference, UPS wants around $40 to ship a 13 pound box (a fraction of the size of the bale) on a 2 hour drive.

Sidenote, I had to laugh out loud literally, when I read the comment saying the nearest good supply store was a 35 minute drive, so not local at all. Not being an ass, I actually envy that a bit because I am in the country and 35 minutes from anywhere, so I consider anything within an hour to be local. I almost forgot what it’s like to be spoiled with conveniences in the city, but I wouldn’t go back for anything given the peace and quiet and the privacy I have here, especially for my outdoor gardening.

Anyway, when in doubt, go to the source. The source says it’s all good.

Well that doesn’t make sense
vermiculite Holds water
Perlite does the opposite

Why would they switch something that holds water for something that helps drain water
Just doesn’t add up

Excellent point, and of course I can’t answer for them.

That said, perlite and vermiculite are also both used to aerate and loosen up the soil so maybe they just changed the ratios of their mix to accommodate the perlite substitution? Maybe they even added something else to the mix?

I don’t know if I’m allowed to post links and phone numbers, so I will only say that Promix customer service was not difficult to get hold of, for those of you who want facts instead of my speculation.
I’d be interested to find out the answers if someone can post the results of their phone call or email.

Nowadays I only add perlite to the outdoor garden because it gets manure etc. But indoors it’s just pro mix hp, a little earthworm castings and some dry amendments. All organic, very simple and perfect for a lazy ass like myself, just add water after initial mix.

As far as I’m concerned, Promix is still the best option for my needs and I am extremely relieved to find out that it’s not being discontinued. As long as it’s still organic and not poison I’m very happy.

I see some growers using this stuff with a third of compost to try a "Coots" mix kind of thing. If I wasn't set with soil for couple years I'd try this myself.

It’s what I used it for, it’s been a great change so far just finishing my 2nd run in my no till bed.

It’s a great base for your soil, you’ll need to add compost/worm castings and some amendments. It goes a long way.

It’s not $100 unless you are having it shipped, it’s around $50 per bale if you go to a local garden store or any big home improvement box store.

That’s interesting, the ProMix HP I bought last year had perlite and not vermiculite. I’m curious now when the change happened. I also prefer the perlite, I added lava rock for added aeration as perlite will breakdown and also finds its way to the top of the soil.

I’m glad I caught that measurement in your comment, thanks. I quoted a 32 ft.³ bag, just a typo, I was referring to the 3.8 ft.³ bags. Sorry for the confusion everyone!

Yes, it is a great product and that is a very reasonable price.
It is basically loose and fluffy soil, which cannabis roots prefer. It has zero nutrients so you can safely start seedlings or clones in it, but you will need to add some type of nutrient soon after. I use it for every stage of growth with photoperiods and autoflowers.

If mixing with other light soils, you may consider getting the BX instead of HP as it holds water a little longer. If mixing with heavier soil, HP is the best choice.

Here in Canada it has mycorrhizae (friendly fungus) to stimulate root growth and help absorb nutrients, but I noticed in France you also get bacillus in yours. This is basically another friendly fungus that helps the roots get nutrients (after you add them) from the soil. Maybe the bacillus is a bonus, or maybe they just put the same total amount of fungi as ours, just two different types together? Either way, you will not regret your purchase.

Edit : just after I posted this I noticed you were shopping back in May, lol! Hopefully you haven’t missed your opportunity by now!

I've since changed to ProMix HP and am loving it. I cut it with compost and boom... Set it and forget 90% of the grow. Except for the occasional top dress. And the cherry on top ..is my local supplier has an overstock of the stuff, so I'm getting mine for $30 a 3.8 CF a bag.
