Is it wrong that Iโm grumpy about having to put in thought about what the inoculates might do to my sterile perfectly aerated happy place?Promix IS a good soil ? I have possibily to buy this in france for 40โฌView attachment 2165729 ...
I can buy ProMix HP in Canada right now for $40 Canadian dollars $100USD is nutsIs it wrong that Iโm grumpy about having to put in thought about what the inoculates might do to my sterile perfectly aerated happy place?![]()
My gardening store in northern Maine had pallet after pallet of it Friday, $44 I think it wasSo I am finding it harder and harder to find pro-mix... one of the local NORMAL gardening stores said pro-mix had been discontinued.... anyone else hear of this???
Well that doesnโt make senseInternet rumours can destroy us!
I just called Promix head office and they assured me our everyday products are not being discontinued. There is currently a shortage of vermiculite, so they had to switch to perlite
Excellent point, and of course I canโt answer for them.Well that doesnโt make sense
vermiculite Holds water
Perlite does the opposite
Why would they switch something that holds water for something that helps drain water
Just doesnโt add up
Itโs what I used it for, itโs been a great change so far just finishing my 2nd run in my no till bed.I see some growers using this stuff with a third of compost to try a "Coots" mix kind of thing. If I wasn't set with soil for couple years I'd try this myself.
Itโs a great base for your soil, youโll need to add compost/worm castings and some amendments. It goes a long way.Promix IS a good soil ? I have possibily to buy this in france for 40โฌView attachment 2165729 ...
Itโs not $100 unless you are having it shipped, itโs around $50 per bale if you go to a local garden store or any big home improvement box store.I can buy ProMix HP in Canada right now for $40 Canadian dollars $100USD is nuts
Thatโs interesting, the ProMix HP I bought last year had perlite and not vermiculite. Iโm curious now when the change happened. I also prefer the perlite, I added lava rock for added aeration as perlite will breakdown and also finds its way to the top of the soil.Internet rumours can destroy us!

To be clear, I called from Canada so it may be different in the states, but I expect the rep would have clarified if it was discontinued in one country and not the other. I inquired specifically about pro mix HP and BX in 32 ft.ยณ bales.
Incidentally, here in Ontario they are available at grow stores and most of the big box stores including Canadian Tire, and price ranges roughly $50-$60 Canadian plus tax. Home Depot now closes their garden centre for the winter so they technically discontinue the product within their system, but thatโs why it doesnโt appear in a search until spring.
Shipping would be expensive anywhere as these things way over 60 pounds. For reference, UPS wants around $40 to ship a 13 pound box (a fraction of the size of the bale) on a 2 hour drive.
Sidenote, I had to laugh out loud literally, when I read the comment saying the nearest good supply store was a 35 minute drive, so not local at all. Not being an ass, I actually envy that a bit because I am in the country and 35 minutes from anywhere, so I consider anything within an hour to be local. I almost forgot what itโs like to be spoiled with conveniences in the city, but I wouldnโt go back for anything given the peace and quiet and the privacy I have here, especially for my outdoor gardening.
Anyway, when in doubt, go to the source. The source says itโs all good.![]()
Iโm glad I caught that measurement in your comment, thanks. I quoted a 32 ft.ยณ bag, just a typo, I was referring to the 3.8 ft.ยณ bags. Sorry for the confusion everyone!Last year I got a 3.8 bag of promix hp mychrozie from Family Farm and Home for $40. I have not shopped for any yet this year.
Yes, it is a great product and that is a very reasonable price.Promix IS a good soil ? I have possibily to buy this in france for 40โฌView attachment 2165729 ...
