I don't water my outdoor when they get that big unless there is a drought. Their roots can find what they need, especially if you mulch them. That's my soil in my area though so don't take it as gospel

I have a ton of clay soil here so watering daily 5:30 am is a must just before the sun hits em

So the clay soil is probably an issue. Hows your drainage?
Roots have a hard time getting oxygen in clay soils. Great amout of natural nutrients but probably best to dig a big pit and amend whats there to drain better for next year.

Will do for sure for next year, I do amend every year but the pit might just be the ticket. Thanks

She still shows me when she's thirsty, so I thought drainage seemed ok.

A big plant like that should be able to go a few days at least without water. Its roots are either too small or cant pull enough water from the medium to sustain itself. Putting your hose on a trickle and watering super slowly for an hour would probably be better than a big dump quickly every day.

Or a slow release system. A few buckets with small holes in the bottom filled up to slowly drain over a extended period of time if you don't want to sit around waiting for the hose to trickle for an hour.

I think Tree bee Is right! It looks like that weird, dark purple that affects the new growth! Especially back there! And I haven’t seen a solution for it other than hoping it grows out of it! Just two cents good luck

yep though you’ll notice with soil that has clay that most times plant branching will stay within the diameter of the hole, the tap root can penetrate further down hence grow taller not wider,. clones usually end up smaller in height,..

In my case there used to be a concrete pad for a chicken coop decades ago. So once they get deep enough into the clay they find sand and stones, roots go nuts in that

What time of day is best to trim a branch off, I have a few branches that have black mold started at the top and is working its way down the nodes towards the main stalk, I've tried Sulphur dust and mold spray.

Next year, dig some of the clay out and toss in a couple cups of vermiculite on the bottom. It can house trillions of microbes, breaks up clay soil beautiful to help drainage, and gives you the long-term benefit of silica...and silica helps strengthen cell walls making plants hardier to disease, molds, and pests. Silica is what the shell of the trichomes are made of.

Hey MrT, I have hella clay too. I haven’t planted in the ground (plan for next year tho), but that shit can get super sticky and hard to work with. Gotta mix it up. I have my native clay as 25% of my soil mix in pots and they’re doing okay, anymore than that would probably smother out my roots lol

My soil is like half clay and shell. I amended with light pumice stone (light horticultural pumice > perlite in-ground outdoors. Screenable and reusable too), compost and creek loam. But i still left all the clay and shale in there. Free silica and calcium lol. I did have to water 2x a day during that heat wave but clay and shale doesnt turn my nose up at all.

If you have really hard water, or well water, that clay and shell is your ally actually.
