Hey!

Canadian newbie here!

I have never grown anything, and not under any illusion that it will be easy.

I decided to splurge to give myself the best odds of success.

My set up is:

-Spider Farmer 28x28x63 tent,
-AC Infinity IONBOARD S22 grow light, -one CLOUDRAY A6 clip fan,
-4-inch CLOUDLINE Inline Fan
-Controller 69 Pro.
-Five Vivosun 5-gallon Fabric pots

I also have a cheap little humidifier that I’m hoping will do the job.

I currently have my first seed germinating, a “Pure CBD” Auto, and am using the paper towel/ziploc method as per the seed bank’s recommendations.

Can’t help but to think it’s not the best method, so would love some recommendations there!

Also, I’ve been looking into watering regiments and am a bit confused. My plan was to plant the seeds directly into their final pot once the taproot hits 2cm, but apparently it can essentially suffocate a seedling if I water the whole pot? So do I just spray the centre where the seed is?

Wondering if a newbie like myself might have more luck transplanting than growing in a big pot right away?

I’m rambling…

Anyway! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome! Not a soil grower, I do autos in coco. My recommendation is fill your pot half way up. Water it evenly and slowly until you get a little discharge out the bottom, fill the pot the rest of the way with soil. And water it slowly until a little discharge at the bottom occurs. This will naturally compact your soil and give your auto plenty of water to sprout. Without risk of drowning it. Hope this helps good luck!

I would have never thought to split the initial watering in half like that. Makes total sense though! Thank you very much!

I've always used the paper towel method with good results. I plant into the final container once germinated. Always afraid of damaging roots.

You just need to make sure you give small amounts of water at first to not drown it. Water in a circle around the seedling until it gets bigger. It's a learning curve, eventually you get the hang of it.

The paper towel method did work just fine, and if it ain’t broke I won’t try to fix it/reinvent the wheel. I’m just curious how much better/worse it is than the soak in a cup of water or straight to soil methods.

I’m more afraid of damaging the taproot than a moderately developed root system. But maybe it’s more resilient immediately after sprouting?

I'd recommend a dehumidifier to control your "lung" room humidity. Will make it much easier to control relative humidity in the tent. As far as germination, do what works for you. I've never done anything but seeds in a solo cup, transplant to a one gallon then again to 7 gallon final home. Keep the seedlings in some kind of humidity dome with a heat mat to keep em warm. Keep soil lightly moist, then lightly misting the seedling once they pop. I've done way more veggie seeds then medicine seeds, but it's worked for me. Good growing!

With that setup and the 69 pro the learning curve becomes a lot less steep. Great choices

Problem is my lung room is very dry. Too dry. If my little humidifier isn’t running in the tent it drops below 70% in about 5 minutes.

Also struggling to keep the inline fan running frequently, let alone nonstop, without having a super high vpd/low temp+humidity, so I’m in a constant battle with cycling the fans on and off. hopefully the humidity dome is doing its job!

I have a heat mat in there too, but I’ll definitely need a heater for next winter at which point I probably will opt for a new humidifier/dehumidifier too. I’ve learned unfinished Canadian basements aren’t the best places to grow

You'll want it well below 70% when you reach later flowering stages. I grow in a not as cold basement as yours in northern Illinois, so I can appreciate your concerns! Don't know your plans ss far as plant count, but rh can get pretty high at lights out with a packed tent. A dehumidifier might not be a bad idea to have on hand. Lol, the wife was incredulous when she discovered I run a dehumidifier in the lung room AND a humidifier in the tent while drying the harvests! That's when it's especially important to have s handle on your humidity levels!

Fair point I hadn’t considered. I am currently just doing one at a time so I can focus/take notes, and not kill too many plants at once I doubt I can do many more than 2 at a time with my current set up anyway, but I can already feel the itch for a 2nd or bigger tent/light..

There are some Zkittles clones vegging in that tent now, but I'll be moving them to a larger tent tomorrow. Usually, I only grow one large plant at a time in that tent. We just harvested a nice OG Kush from it last week.

I almost got the control plug to run my ViparSpectra p1000, but their customer service was so bad I returned it and got the ionboard before I even started. Glad to know they work for a similar set up cause I’ve heard mixed reviews.

I’m running things like:

for my caveman brain to remember. 70 degrees, 70 humidity, 0.7 vpd. I heard between 0.2-0.8 vpd for seedlings hope I haven’t been running too low. But also had a power outage on my first day in soil! Just my luck. So I can’t imagine the decimal point will do more damage than the 3 hours without light or heat it did sprout though, so fingers crossed it’s salvageable. Though my seed coat is currently stuck.

I haven’t used any nutrients yet, I didn’t want to burn the little guy out.

I’m thinking of doing blackstrap molasses during late veg/flower, and am between a cal-mag or trying club soda.. but tbh I’ve been putting off thinking about any additives too much, though I should probably get a jump on it, with this plant being an auto and all.

Friday night to Monday morning progress:

"Hopefully your wife smokes and benefits from your expensive hobby " Lol! She does not. She does like tomatoes, though. My first grow indoors I also planted a couple of tomato plants. Fresh tomatoes in the middle of winter was a great selling point for acquiring a second tent!

By the by... the dehumidifier i purchased last October already crapped out. It'll be replaced under warranty, but it's one of those jump through internet hoops to get it done. Fortunately, I'm only in week 2 of flower in my current grow so humidity isn't a big issue yet. If it had been a few weeks later I'd be scrambling to get a new one quickly! Just a thought to keep in mind for the future. Keep some spare cash on hand in emergency situations. It would suck to have this ruined by mold/rot!
