Sounds like the exact progression I made from my first DWC to where I am at now. I highly recommend turning your setup into a recirculating DWC. You can even use your 5 gallon bucket as the external reservoir. I use basically the same setup: 17gal tote with 5gal external reservoir. Connected with 1/2" tubing, but I need to upgrade to 1" tubing for the return since my pump empties my 5gal bucket forcing me to cycle the pump on and off. Anyways, with the external reservoir it is much easier to test your PH and EC. You can also continue to use frozen water bottles (I do the same, hehe).

Day 24 of flowering AK48, under VIVOSUN aero light 200w and just added the phlizon 100w on the left for the lower branches 2 days ago that I just didn’t have the heart to chop. The lower buddies under the 100w have developed amazingly since I put this light in the past two days. Average ppfd all around 900.
