Hiya!
I understand that the shortening on days is the natural trigger for flowering. But what happens on the equator where day lengths don't really change? How is flowering triggered?
I feel like I must be missing some crucial and obvious point here ^_^
Thanx ^_^

Everything will flower within 2 weeks. So to get size you must veg indoors beforehand and just put them outside to finish flower.
Thats how it is in hawaii, our daylengths vary from around 11 hours of sun in the winter to just under 14 hours of light during the summer solstice. Pretty much anything under 14 hours will start to flower immediately.

On the equator plants flower immediately because the hour of light to dark hours are identical 12/12 all year long so to veg and get big plants they would have to use supplemental light to increase number of daylight hours going to plants but most just grower larger patches smaller plants or really large sativas that take 24 weeks to fully flower.
Just my 2 cents.

Even the equatorial Sativas?

I'm trippin' out, I assumed Hawai'i's day lengths would be the same as Puerto Rico, but you folks must be a good bit further from the equator than I thought. :)

What I would do in your situation is artificially extend the daylight phase of the photoperiod. Then, when they're ready to be flowered out, simply turn off the lights. Unless you're growing a landrace equatorial Sativa. But new growers shouldn't do that.

I don't think they flower immediately if from seed, but after a couple weeks most strains will begin to flower. We are so use to growing indoors with 18 hours of light, but very few places actually get that much light. I read an article by DJ Short and he said something along the lines of '18 hours of light sucks'.

Hawaii is from 19-22N. Seed plants will go directly in to flower during the winter months, finish at about a foot or two unless they have lots of sat in them. Seeds and cuttings placed outside in say June tend to veg a bit longer. The equatorial sats will tend to use age and sun angle to trigger flowering.

laughing... in respect...
here on the equatorial Pacific atolls of Kiribati plants will grow till mature at 3 to 6 months.
autoflowering seeds mature earlier. in fact all plants are auto flowering under these conditions.
some strains mature sooner than others.
flower time seems abut the same per strain.
.
in 2016 in Reno i has an opportunity to provide whole mature plants to Dispensaries when recreational use was legalized.
so i used trolleys and a blacked out green house to top-shelf success. (see picture.)
here it is illegal and we are working to legalize.
.
i have not tried but i think here on the equator we do not need total darkness to force flower... just strong shading the last few hours of the day and morning and they w
ill flower.. i will post when its legal to share.
.
cheers
.
