We're growing our first photoperiod plants and have just switched to <13 hours per day. Can anyone give me some idea how long it will take for the colas to be ready for harvest? The plants are four months old.

It will take a couple weeks after flipping to really see pistils. By 4 weeks in flower buds are quite noticeable. If you want good examples look for some grow diaries for the strain you are growing. ( eg. https://growdiaries.com/diaries/474-pineapple-express ) As the buds develop you notice new layers of leaves and more pistils stacking on top of the previous.
Most seed vendors give something around 63 days in flower with when you actually flip to <13 hours being the start point. Some sativa strains take longer than Indica plants but many plants are hybrids now and take some where in the middle time wise. Some people like to keep the plants longer to get maximum size of bud and the strongest stone. Outside plants will often end up with mold using this strategy which destroys the bud.
It can feel like you are watching and waiting for paint to dry at times. Let the plants do their thing and have patience. It will be worth it.

Pineapple Poundcake from Lucky 13 Seeds at 3 1/2 weeks. Pineapple/ bubblegum scent which takes over the tent. Leaves tend towards yellow. Regular seeds and I was lucky enough to get 2 out of 2 female this grow. Yaaaayyyyy !!! Stacking (layering) up very nicely.
Anywhere from 8-12 weeks, possibly more, it is mainly dependent on genetics. The average strain takes about 9 weeks or so. There is no way to know right now unless you know what the strain is of your plants. If you don't know the strain, you will have to keep an eye on it and when the buds stop fattening up and a lot of the pistils turn orange and the trichomes change to cloudy, then you know the buds will be finished soon.
