Depends on your media. I run straight hydroton. Some people use rock wool. If you use any rock wool in my opinion you should run straight rock wool but that's just me.

If you media absorbs your nutrients once, twice, or maybe three times a day is often enough to feed them. You should run your pump just long enough to get everything that needs to get wet...well wet. Then let it drain.

The problem I see is people starting plants in rock wool cubes and then running hydroton underneath. The rock wool absorbs nutes and water but if you only have that little cube of it it acts like a bottleneck in the process. Keep it too wet and you get stem rot while the rest of the roots aren't doing much. If the whole root mass is in rock wool then it gets fed the whole day on only one or two wet cycles. With straight hydroton I flood 6-8 times a day because the roots are in air and dry a lot sooner. More food for longer means a faster growing plant. It's just simple math really.

o if I use just hydroton start with clones versus seeds?

Im a noob at this and trying to learn as much as I can before I set this thing up. It was giving to me and I grow in soil. So Im like a white kid in a black neighborhood..

what kind of system are you growing in, whats the details mate?

its a 3x3 flood and drain system I dunno the size of the pump but I could find out pretty easy I guess its on iy somewhere.. it has a metal stand a resivour and the tray the sits with the hydroton in it a pump with the hose that goes from the res to the tray.

also have hydroton and rockwool and 6 inch net pots he just gave me and assload of stufff

I have more experience with rockwool than hydroton, so i dont want to steer you wrong,
I water 1 time a day in veg, 2 times in flower.
Temps, rh varies from grow room to grow room so its hard to nail it precise. Water twice a day for a few minutes, watch your plants, you will learn there needs.
Most important have your ppms correct and ph

If you want to see a straight rockwool flood and drain that kicks ass check out desertsquirrel's thread. I think it's called "new room" or something. That guy can grow some stuff that will make your head spin. He's a great resource around here....I think.
