Generally, the trichomes will be clear and turn cloudy as they ripen (think of fruit). Once they are cloudy that's your optimal "ripeness", so to speak. When they turn amber, they are "over ripe" to keep with the fruit analogy. Ideally, you want the vast majority of them to be cloudy with a small percentage to be amber. As it "over ripens" it will lose its potency and provide more of a couch-lock type buzz. Sounds to me like you cut it down a little too early if most were clear.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Cheers,

BA.

100% cloudy on the bud trichomes is max THC potency. As more and more trichomes turn amber, they're maturing and making secondary cannabinoids. THC potency falls, but you get other effects. How far you let that go is a matter of personal preference. I never chop before at least 100% cloudy...if I see clear bud trikes, I'm waiting. I like sleepy weed, so I generally wait for at least 10% amber, sometimes longer. 25+% amber is a delicacy you'll rarely find in a dispo. With today's high-THC varieties, I don't think we lose much by waiting, especially if we're smoking, and the entourage effects of various secondary cannabinoids are fun to explore.

Those trichomes are like miniature fruit and fruit on trees and plants doesn't typically ripen uniformly. Clear trichomes carry no cannabinoid payload yet and amber indicates maximum ripeness and degradation starting to happen. So I'm watching the RATE at which the clear turns cloudy, and comparing to the rate cloudy is turning amber and if Im getting amber at a faster rate than I'm getting cloudy, I harvest because the longer I wait at that point I'm going to lose potency it has while waiting for it to create more potency.
