How To Clone?

I ain't got nothing, only solo cups, dirt and secators. Can I take cuttings and place directly into soil? How efficient is this? Can i put the bottom of the stems hanging in water and cover the top of pot to block light? I've never cloned before, I want to start flowering now but I wanna nick a few clones before I do. Any advice from you seasoned cloners would be much appreciated

First you need a rooting hormone, such as clonex. Theres different methods of cloning. I have cut the stem on a 45 degree angle and put the stem in a container of ph'ed water. You can cut the stem on a 45 degree angle and scratch the stem a little above the cut , dip in rooting hormone and put in wet soil, rockwool cubes, rapid rooters, etc. Put a humidity dome over them to keep them humid. Also spray the leaves because that is how they get nutrients until they have roots.I had about 50-65% success rate just putting in water. But i recently got a cloning machine. It would take up to 2 weeks to get roots just putting in water. Cloning machine is faster.hope that helps you

yes cuttings in dirt can root, cuttings sitting in a cup of water can root. the effectiveness compared to using a medium designed for rooting and hormones to promote rooting is drastically lower in rooting time and success rate. if you have no other options go for it. take 2x as many clones as you need just in case half die.

I’ve taken a cutting and stuck it right into soil. Put a plastic baggie over it, and on a heat mat set to 80*F. I had roots in 1-2 weeks. I did it just to see if it would work. I didn’t use rooting hormone of any kind, or a 45* cut, or stem shaving, or rooting plugs. All of that stuff will more than likely improve your chances for success. But they are not necessary. All it needs is about 80* and 80% RH.

Personally i find IBA to be very effective and fast. I got some amazing roots with IBA after just a week in plugs and the stems that i threw out after i got to the required specimen count, were covered with many many white root sites.

I only put my cuts in dirt . . . I use a powder rooting hormone . . . 45* slice on the stem . . . sit in water for a few minutes. . . . dip in powder . . . place in hole in the dirt . . . cut the bigger leaves on your cutting in half . . . mist plant with spray bottle. water only at first . . . I use a big freezer zip type bag over the container to keep moisture in & POOF a week and a half later you have a little plant . . . Keep it happy & it will make you happy . . .

In the past I’ve made my own DWC cloners and have had good success. However the parts and time it takes to find the materials it’s just easier to plop down and get an oxy cloner. It works and with some minor tweaks it’s a very competent cloner.

What I did is it includes an air pump with air stone and a submersible water pump to circulate the water. The water pump however tends to heat up the water to a point where algae becomes an issue. I’ve taken the temp at 87 degrees in a room where it was 70 degrees ambient temp. So that’s a fairly large increase in temp.

But if you remove the water pump, replace the air pump with a dual outlet air pump and run a second air stone you’ll end up with a DWC like cloner that does not raise the water temp but a couple degrees. I took the temp in the same room and it stayed about 73 degrees. Which is perfectly fine for the task and doesn’t promote algae growth.

most important thing is relative humidity. If you've got a fish tank lying around they're perfect if you have a tight fitting glass top. And only $10 if you have a petsmart or petco close. another $10 for the top.

Cut the sample from the plant. Lay the stem in rooting gel and cover it as you make a cut in the gel at a 45 degree angle. Remove and place into your preferred (already soaked)plug then place into the fish tank with some clay pebbles or some similar grow media. Fill the tank with an inch of water and close the top. Make sure the top layer of pebbles is dry so the roots have to look for water, so if you put in an inch of water put in 2 inches of pebbles so the water wicks up a to the plug. No venting necessary, just leave it and wait for roots to explode.

One key that I believe is important is to not touch them until roots pop. Just leave them alone. Start looking for roots about day 10.

Clones directly into growing medium can work but it can backfire as well. I like to see roots or bumps before going into medium. From there I can usually see roots poking out the bottom drain holes if my small clear solo cups in just a couple days. You can use another clear solo cup as a makeshift dome as well.

Or you can do what I used to do and water clone. Just take a big solo cup (not clear) and fill it 2/3 with water. Put your cutting(s) in it and stick a clear solo cup dome over it. Then change out the water every 3-5 days and wait. Should have roots in about 7-14 days. Some strains clone easier than others.

I use the clear cups for freshly rooted clones and seedlings as well. Just poke about 5-6 holes in the bottom perimeter and one in the middle. This lets me see the roots as they develop. They go into the large solid cups to keep light out.

I root cuttings in water. Usually about 10 days to 2 weeks i see bumps and thin new roots starting. I change the water in the glass when it gets cloudy. Or just add some when evaperated.

Then when i see the roots start i plant in a cup of soil and put them in a clone dome for a few days to promote the roots more. Then start hardening them off in the veg tent a little each day until strong.

Slower but just as effective. No chemicals or special stuff needed imo.

Whats your light schedule like on these? Also do you use any nutes in the water? I've been have a hard time with my oxyclone. Don't use hormex or clonex and fed the reservoir aloe powder and build a bloom with a splash of diluted bleach and full power. The base of the cuts are covered in algae and going to reset sanitize and clean this for the 4th time sigh....

I just leave them off to the side or in the shade under plants in the veg tent. Its lit with T-5 flourescent at 18/6. I do keep them low like 18” to 2 feet below and away from the light.

And i never use any additives. Just .3 ec/ 150 ppm well water unadjusted.

When they get planted in cups of soil i keep them down and in shade if possible in the dome till they show roots and start growing.

Does take 3 weeks or more this way. Im not in a hurry for cuttings.

Yes, you can just stick a cutting in soil, cover with a sandwich bag and it will root if your environment is stable. But that’s not ideal. Here’s how I do it:

Clone dome on a heat mat set to 80*F. A small amount of plain water in the tray to keep the humidity up in the dome. T5 light on 24/0. The light being on all the time helps maintain a stable environment in the dome, more so than the plants needing a lot of light at this point. I maintain about 80*F and 80% RH. Cuttings are first placed into a cup of water immediately after they are taken from the mother plant. This is to prevent an embolism (air bubble entering the stem and killing the cutting). When everything is gathered and I’m ready, I clip any large fan leaves by half, lightly scrape the stem, dip in Clonex, then into a rooting plug and under the dome. After three days I slowly begin opening the dome vents over a few days time. I don’t need to mist them as the environment is perfect and keeps them moist. I regularly get roots in 6 days using this method. They are usually in pots by 10 days.

My cuttings are usually 4” tall and I cut the stem at a 45 degree angle. I dip the ends in both the gel and powder rooting hormone (gel first, then powder). Cut off about 50% of the vegetation. I then put a little of the gel rooting hormone inside the rapid rooter hole and put the cutting in there and press it down so it is securely in the rapid rooter. Mist with water a few times a day. 100% success rate this way. You could try with just placing it in soil and misting the leaves but you won’t have a high success rate.

I take my cuts right before I put them in flower or 1 week into flower.

I also use rooting plugs exactly as @Enforcer and @Seraphine do. A couple tips i can add are:
1. Make sure you press the rooter tight around the stem, you do not want any air touching the stems,
2. Take your cuttings from the bottom of your plant they naturally with have more of the hormone responsible for root growth in them.
3. 80F makes a big difference in how fast the roots will grow so a heat mat is a big plus.
