I have been pruning this Don Carlos for awhile. It has had a tendency to make a lot of little branching off each main branch. I have been trimming these off except for ones on end. My thoughts have been to remove inner vegetation and excessive branches. My big concern is bud rot and I try and prune to keep the plant airy.

I wonder if I am over doing it? If I’m removing too much?

The plant is getting over 8 feet tall.

We raised the roof 18 inches higher on one end to accommodate the height.

I wonder how much longer the stretch will be?

So am I over pruning and how much higher might the plant get.

Best regards.

If you are in a high humidity climate, then do what you gotta do to make sure air flow is adequate. You defoliated more than I would have, but your plant looks happy and healthy.

I would hold off on any more pruning until the stretch finishes. You can still remove a few fan leaves here and there, but let any new branches grow for a bit during the stretch. They may surprise you and break through to direct sunlight. Especially with how much open air your plant currently has.

After the stretch, pull any small branches that won't be receiving direct sunlight.

In my opinion, it might not stop! I think that roof is causing a lot of of it! Stretching for light! Good luck with it!

THCosmic, thank you so much for your comments and advice. I appreciate it.
I think you are saying I could have let more buds grow farther down on the branches.

Chucky’s comment could have some truth to it.

It might be that the plastic cover is limiting some sunlight, but I’m kind of scared of direct rain coming down on the buds. I think I could have waited on putting up the roof till after flower.

Thanks again.
