I started my seedlings in rapid rooters which I then placed in jiffy pots which I understand are supposed to be biodegradable. I've never used either of these before & am unsure how & when to transplant. Will roots break through the jiffy wall so I know it's time to transplant & if so do the pots need to be saturated so walls are weak enuff for roots to break through? I read you can plant the pots directly in soil but jiffy pot walls seem kinda tough & I'm worried my seedlings will become rootbound.

When I used the pots I would water by spraying entire outside of pot until soaking wet, including bottom, then tear away bottom before placing in final pot. Because of your same concerns, I now germ in Jiffy pellets and transfer to final pot day after sprout and no worries about root development.. Organic soil auto grower.

When I did place the rapid rooters in the jiffy pots I planted them with the top of the rooter sticking a lil above surface because I read it prevents seedlings from drowning. Now I'm reading not to do that because top sticking out will act as wick drying soil out faster. They do seem to be drinking alot. I suppose this is why u shouldn't follow random info online.

Those are the pellets. Just dig a pellet sized hole, plop in the dirt, and cover up the tops bit with the dirt and you're good. So basically level with the ground.

As for when, I wait until she has roots coming out the bottom including the tap root (so tap root plus at least one other). This is usually around the second set of serrated leaves (so after the cotyledons). Should take like 3-4 days. Make sure to water mostly from bottom and get capillary action that way.

Not sure if you're referring to the rapid rooter or the peat pot. I probably confused cuz I used rapid rooters & peat pots which is probably stupid. If you're referring to peat pot I didnt go with the pellets I bought the round shaped pots made outta peat & newspaper which are slightly different as the pellets have more of mesh looking covering & the pots have thick looking walls which are what concerned me.

Ok guys, after looking up images of plants at day 16, I fear mine aren't up to par. I know every grow is different but as I said before not being able to see roots in the peat pots has worried their growth could be stunted. My best one has 3 sets of leaves not counting cotyledons. The 3rd set of leaves is just starting to show & the 2nd set has 3 blades rather than one. Most of them have the 3 blades on 2nd set but some are smaller than others. I've been soaking walls of peat pot so its weak enuff for roots to penetrate.

Ah, mb. Yes, I have had nowhere near the success with those.

My guess is you are watering nowhere near enough when you water. That was my problem when I tried them with jiffy mix.

Again, I use pellets now, but if I had to go back that is what I'd do.

Yeah,I regret using them. Most would think why use rapid rooter & peat pots but at the time it made sense. I figured if I started with rapid rooters then moved to 3" peat pots rather than straight to their bigger home pots I could avoid drowning seedling & would make for smooth transplant bcuz supposedly u can plant pot & all. I've heard transplanting gradually with smaller pots promotes faster growth. Now I'm wishing I would've stuck rapid rooters straight in final pot!

You can and healthy roots will push through the cardboard very easily.

I would water to significant runoff and see how they do.

K,thx. When reading online if roots can penetrate these walls ppl.point out they were designed for plants with weak roots & if plants can grow up through concrete they can grow through these peat/cardboard walls but I have doubts. They seem pretty tough. It's not so much I doubt they can penetrate as much as think it will slow growth so I been trying to soak the walls hoping that'll give em the push they need.
