I am going to upgrade to either a 250w or 400w hps for flowering. I used a T5 for my last (which was my first) grow.

I only plan on growing 1 plant at a time. I'm growing indoors in a closet roughly 4 x 2.5 using a hydroponic bucket dwc set up.

My question is: Since I won't be using all of the space would the 250w be enough for the plant to thrive? From HTG, the 400w is only $2 more, but I am worried about heat since I am not able to do any duct work for serious heat ventilation. I do have a poly sheet with tarp zipper door with holes for ventilation. Fan would be blowing from behind light towards hole in tarp to ventilate heat, but that is pretty much all I can do.

So would a 400w be overkill for 1 plant?

Thanks

If I have posted this in the wrong section, mods can you please direct me to the correct one?

Unless your ok with moving after the fire I'd stay away from any HPS for a closet. Transitioning from fluorescent to hps, you'll be generating much more heat which you don't want, in a closet. With the location restraint, the only move I see is to LED. For something effective in that space you'll be spending $200 min, higher end maybe $600. Managing the heat will still be a concern.

Without air I would only do led

Well I appreciate the replies. I knew they get hot, but I didn't think they would get that hot.

LED is out of my price range right now. I will probably just get a better T5 and add some more cfls until I can use my back bedroom and get a grow tent.

Thanks

There are 500 watt CFL's which would work great for your closet - they are equal to 200 - 400 watt MH, HPS - Cost about $30.00

I will look into those. Are they available at lowes or Home Depot?

I take it that they don't put off as much heat as an hid light, is that correct?

Thanks

Well started looking into LED to add to my T5s. Looking at the viparspectra 300w led with reflector or mars hydro led. Not sure how good they are but they have great reviews.

Do t5s, led, and cfl work good together?

Most led are utter garbage. Check out the 315 cmh. Spend.10 mins researching it, you'll be very happy. I dumped ALL my hid for cmh and couldn't be happier.

Ceramic metal halide? I says it's meant to be much cooler than hps.

Looks pretty pricey. Is there a specific brand to look at?

Growershouse.com

Prism ballasts
Mogul socket adapters
Philips agro bulbs

Not expensive at all.

But you save in power costs vs running a 600w bulb to get nearly the same results. Spend a little $, it pays off in a month or so.

You can get a kit for a bit cheaper.

I'm going to seriously consider it. Does it put out a lot less heat?

If your looking for an upgrade.

I'd look into a 4 foot 16 bulb t5 fixture.
http://www.horticulturesource.com/m...cts_id=22453&gclid=CNrRgfLJ2NICFUeHswodhTUIlA

It should fit your closet dimensions 46” x 24” x 3"

That sure would max your space out.
But it would also heat your space up with all 16 bulbs on.

It would be oversized and you could turn it up or down by switching bulbs off

8 bulbs on = 432 watts.
12 bulbs on =648 watts
16 bulbs on = 864 watts

It's a long shot but I'm just tossing the idea out there.

I run 4 in my flower room. I can leave my.hand on the glass under the hood, and it's just warm. Not burning hot. This is on any of the 4 hoods.

I appreciate the advice. I'm going to look into it. I really wanted to upgrade to an hid light but can't really vent the heat so this could be the answer.

Thanks!
