Light Upgrade Question

If your looking for an upgrade.

I'd look into a 4 foot 16 bulb t5 fixture.
http://www.horticulturesource.com/m...cts_id=22453&gclid=CNrRgfLJ2NICFUeHswodhTUIlA

It should fit your closet dimensions 46” x 24” x 3"

That sure would max your space out.
But it would also heat your space up with all 16 bulbs on.

It would be oversized and you could turn it up or down by switching bulbs off

8 bulbs on = 432 watts.
12 bulbs on =648 watts
16 bulbs on = 864 watts

It's a long shot but I'm just tossing the idea out there.

I do like t5s and the ability to have different bulbs. I will keep that in mind. Thanks.

Well I appreciate the replies. I knew they get hot, but I didn't think they would get that hot.

LED is out of my price range right now. I will probably just get a better T5 and add some more cfls until I can use my back bedroom and get a grow tent.

Make vents, put a 600 cooltube w either 4-6 inch ducting to an inline fan.
That should do ya!

Dont have all the bulbs in one hood you can get either single 54 watt t-5 thats can help hit the lower canopy! Ive run t-5s just as long if not longer than some and they do not penetrate the canopy well. So getting a set-up that revolves around equal light distribution is key! Imho 600 hps is the most efficient for your space. Its not hard to keep a closet kool with a 600 hps cooltube and 4 inch inline fan.
Like these. Just trying to help......
That light is ideal for a 3 x 3 x 7 area.........

Well... I know I keep changing my mind but I figured out that I can vent heat from an hps light.

Soo, I'm looking at the htg 400w hps. Air cooled hood, inline fan, ducting and should be good to go.

Will add a carbon filter as well.

Why do that. Just score a cmh set up.and forget it. Huge upgrade in light spectrum, cost saving on power draw, uva/uvb. Can run 1 bulb thru veg and flower if you like.

So with the 315cmh you don't need to vent the heat? I am interested in it but I could get the hps set up, carbon filter, fan and everything for the same price as the cmh.

I have a month before I am upgrading so I'll continue to do research before I decide.

I run 3x315 in veg. With ac hoods, and intake exhaust, my.temps are 79-81* with lung room temps be terrible 75 and 77*. This is with my gauge 8" below the bulb.

I'll have to look at it some more. For what's listed above that comes to $250 without a reflector . Cheapest reflector I saw was $135 for cmh.

I don't doubt that it's good, but that would be almost double for the light set up alone. I don't know if I can afford that , especially when I'd still need ventilation equipment.

I'm not a fan of cheap hid kits they will fail early.

I bought my own

I had to spend $230 on a switchable 400w magnetic ballast.

An inline ballast timer $80

Cool tube $30

Hortilux Bulbs ( blue mh $80 / super hps $60)

I'd say a cmh is comparable in price to a quality hid set.

I can only really afford $250-300. I was looking at htg 400w hps since that is my local store and their stuff seems to be good.

I'm still new to all this though so I don't know what brands are good or what to look for, etc. I would rather buy a quality product over a not good one though.

My first piece of advice.

Anything you buy in a store is always overpriced.

Online can cut your costs by as much as half.

Which as a byproduct increases your budget :)

Well I like the sound of that!

What brands should I look for in the HID world?

Not sure if I should look on amazon but they have apollo, Vivosun, ipower? All for great prices and pretty good reviews. They are still a little more expensive than the htg light but are maybe better?

For hid bulbs hortilux is up there.

Their blue mh & super hps are top notch.

I don't have specific brand ballasts here cause everyone has different preferences.

For a ballast I prefer magnetic because they are repairable, and don't blow bulbs as often as digital. Don't emitt rf either.

Some prefer digital for that slight electrical efficiency increase, but bulbs are driven harder and tend to blow faster. They offer dimmability though. And are cheaper to buy but can't repair. And some emitt rf that give away your location.

For the inline ballast timer (heavy duty relay) titan controls has the Apollo 4.

And the fixture is really up to you and the constraints of your grow room.

I'm not sure what your seeing. Sounds like more kits? Try looking for 1 piece at a time

What is a magnetic ballast? Is it connected directly to the reflector?
