I am just seeing tap root emerge from a Banana Kush feminized seed I started germinating on 2/24/25 (took 3 days). I plan on planting it when its a bit bigger into a 4 ounce peat pot, filled with miracle grow potting soil, then when big enough, move to 3 pound cloth bag filled with Ocean Forest. Since there is fertilizer in soil, do I need to also add very diluted fertilizer to seedlings? Any suggestion with good brands? I bought Vivosun A&B liquid fertilizer, however, product states it is for the vegetative and flowering stages....Also, how far from seedlingsshould grow light be? Thanks in advance

Ocean Forest is reported to be too strong or "hot" for seedlings. You for sure do not want to add anything else as Mark mentioned.

Which light do you have? That will help determine light distance/or intensity.

What will be your water source?

Last question: at what temperature has this seed been germinating? I'm just wondering if it was 70°F or less, causing it to pop at a slower rate. It could just be genetics.

Don't feed em just water for the first few weeks what light do you have
Hi and thanks. I bought this set up:

MARS HYDRO 2x2 Grow Tent Kit Complete System with 10 Speed Clip Fan,100W TS600 LED Full Spectrum Grow Light,24"x24"x55" 1680D High Reflective Mylar Grow Tent,4 inch 205 CFM Ventilation System

Distance from lights to seedlings should be 18-24 inches. Start at 24 inches... If they stretch and get "leggy" then reduce to 20", then maybe 18".

I don'tknow exact temperature, but would say the seed is germinating between 68 and 71...Also, we buy spring water to drink and cook with, as we have well water and don't drink it...i was going to use the spring water, or is distilled better?

Spring water in general would be preferable to distilled. Rainwater is also an excellent choice if able to collect it.

I did a test on temperature and humidity inside tent...i put a few spinach seeds in a peat pot, turned on air and lights. The Tent was 18.3 celcius and 52% humidity...Using lights and a small damp towel hanging inside, i can keep temperature steady at 22.3 celcius, and humidity between 65-70%. How big should tap root be when I transfer seed to soil (with tap pointing down when I plant)? I did have a heating pad on ceramic seed plate the first day, but quickly discontinued it because it was getting too hot. I am using paper towel method.

Personal preference; I prefer to sow the seed when the radicle is just emerging. I've seen others wait until it's an inch or longer! Main thing is that it doesn't embed itself into the paper towel, risking damage when removing.

Plant now. No reason to have your root squirreling around in a paper towel doing nothing. Since you almost assuredly have a long root at this point, plant it down. (Normally it doesn’t make a difference, but I’ll plant root up as soon as it emerges. This way the root makes a U turn and sweeps the seed through the soil removing the shell.)

Both spring water and rainwater are infused with minerals and impurities. The BEST water for growing would be filtered through a reverse osmosis filter. Distilled water is pure water. Which is what I personally prefer, because the only nutrients that would be in it are ones I put there. With spring or rain water its impossible to know the composition of the impurities, possibly causing a toxicity once a separate nutrient solution is added.

As low as possible for the light that keeps them from stretching as high up as possible.
Water way less than you think you should.
I would toss the liquid and just get gaia green and use that. Way more beginner friendly ✌️

Reference?

You leave em too long the tap will grow through the paper and then your trying to wiggle it back out or trying to cut that piece to plant with the seed. At least it's not as big a problem with pot seeds as it is with others, like pepper seeds.

Tell that to a whisky distiller. 😄 RO waste a tremendous amount of water and unless you live next to Chernobyl (or collecting off a roof) your rain water shouldn’t pose a problem. Especially if you grow in soil.

A lot depends on your water source/where you live. Rain collection is illegal in some areas due to water rights restrictions. Go figure. My tap is <40 TDS, so not much going on in there. (Actually better to have something around 100 and get free Cal/Mag.)
