I used all my existing big kahuna hoods when I made the switch from 600hps/mh to cmh

+1 for COBs. I think the 140mm pin fins with CXB-3590's and ideal holders and meanwell drivers are easy enough to build.

Yup.... 315 s ftmfw! ( I like that DT)
I changed one out in my eight HPS lighter and saw a difference very quickly. Yes, the conversion kits let you use your reflector and keeps the cost down.

What kind of footprint are you getting with that big hood ? Mine is in a standard sized rectangular hood and it seems to light a 3x3 pretty well. It gets cross lighting from the 600 HPS on either side to help it out. I think I am going to replace every other fixture with CMH, creating a checker board pattern and spectrum for days!

I use 4x315 cmh in my flower room. I have about 2.5" between the side walls, and each hood. Coverage with 1245w cmh vs 1800w hps is even or better with the cmh.

If I understand you correctly...
It can be used for both quite effectively. It throws a nice white light that has plenty of reds gut a fir amount of blue and also quite a bit of UV a and b. Great for all stages, and the combo of HPS and CMH in flower will KILL IT!
Don't have one on my veg room... yet.
Cool running, lower power usage, better spectrum, cost effective ( especially when using the conversion kits) .... no brainer for me!

I use the 930 bulb in flower and the 942 bulb in veg. May swap to all 942 bulbs in flower if I can order and get 4 bulbs in time.

And a 20,000 hr bulb life.....SOLD!

While we are on the subject, and thread appropriate I think....
Any thought on which would be better for a veg room that is 24 x96x 96 tall? I researched 8 lamp t5 cfl in a 48" hood vs 315 cmh.
What I saw was that it was more $$$, or similar price, to buy the cfl hood with eight quality Hortilux bulbs, as compared to one 315.
My thoughts:
Less heat with CMH...? ( not sure of this... anyone?)
Better spectrum ( although a combo of red, blue, uv cfl would work)
Better bulb lifespan
Less light shock when moving under HIDs in bloom room with CMH.
I am thinking the CMH gets the win here...

Cmh pros

Less watts vs 600w
Less heat vs 600w
MUCH MUCH better light spectrum vs 600
+uva and uvb (not found in standard hps or mh bulbs)
Less ac usage vs 600w
Cmh has a 20k bulb life vs 9 weeks ton6 months on normal 600/1k bulbs

one on left is a lightimetunnel/roleadro with citi 1212 3000k cobs in it running at 1200mah each (total cost $135). the one on left is diy citi 1818 3000k that can run up to 2100mah, only running 50% right now (total cost $190)

neither of mine compares to 1000w hps, both at 100% is only 350w. However, 1000w of cobs/quantum boards > 1000w hps/mh because cobs/qb's are more efficient. so, being very general because LED performance varies, 800w of cobs/qb's would be about equal to 1000w of hps/mh as far as light output goes.

the savings from cobs or quantum boards comes from lower wattage and less heat, which typically requires less a/c, an additional savings.
