Newbie starting from the ground up

Newbie in New England looking for direction on how to grow for the 1st time. Chef, IT guy by trade.
Just looking for personal use and some affordable product for recipe development.

...high man, i'd have to say that the most forgiving style of growing is a passive form of hydroponics called 'hempy buckets' derived from ancient Roman technology, basically any watertight container can be made into a 'hempy bucket' very simply by putting a single drainage hole a few inch's up the side of the container, like this.Folger's coffee can i made into a 'hempy'.

...here's a couple Coke bottle 'hempy's', ...note how there are 2 distinct layers, this is important for your buckets to function properly.

...in these Coke bottles i used perlite so it's easy to see that the perlite is used right up to the single drainage hole afterwhich i use straight coco as my main medium, what this does is it creates a seperation between layers, the perlite has different properties so absorbs liquid differently than the coco, if you DON'T use something different and you try to just use coco all the way to the bottom you end up with soggy roots which will kill your plants.

...also, you don't have to use perlite, i found it to be too messy, especially post harvest so i now use either hydroton or grorocks or some such, an added benefit is it has some weight to it so my pots are more stable.

anyway, here is a link to the coco i use and while i get it locally, here you can see you can either now get it locally or you can have it delivered from Amazon.

...also, as a new grower with no experience i'd suggest you try and do things as simply as you can until you learn how to read your plants so i'd suggest you adopt the KISS principles and begin with MaxiBloom as your only nutrient product and after you have at least a few harvey's under your belt you will be ready to fiddle around with expensive and often useless additives.


2.2 lbs. - MaxiBloom - Bloom Stimulator - Hydroponic Nutrient Solution


...now here are a few bud shots of some plants i grew under a 400watt light, a Ceramic Metal Halide to be exact, ...anyway, all were flowered in 2liter and 3liter hempy buckets with perlite at the bottom and coco up top and all were fed nothing but MaxiBloom from rooted clone right up to harvest, with the caveat that i flush with just water for the last 2 weeks before harvest.

...so, i won't try to say that hempy growing is the 'best' way to grow but i will say that i think it's the easiest and therefore the best way for beginners, ...frankly, i'm no beginner and i wouldn't grow any other way.

I have been growing in super soil for years and I think you may have gotten me to try a hempy bucket. Nice clear write up.
All the talk about prepping the coco or choosing the proper coco or that mantra "cal mag deficiency".

...yeah man, i've heard all that stuff about rinsing and while i can't argue against it, it hasn't appeared to be necessary in my own case, i've been using these coco bricks for some years now and i've had zero issues, i just cut the bag and dump the brick into a bin afterwhich i just start adding tap water, usually takes about 4 gallons to fully hydrate the brick and, once rehydrated, you get way more coco than you'd think.

...and Walter, he did indeed give enough info, he said he was new, he said he was a chef and he said he was looking for a way to grow an affordable amount.

...so i gave him a very affordable and sure fire recipe for success, ...you jerked him off with bullshit.

Thanks Bozo for the info. I am organic soil and didn't know the hempy bucket process.
Cuulyman, as a chef I recommend you consider organic soil for taste and flavor. It seems more natural to get my hands dirty with soil. I highly recommend growing from seed. There is nothing like the satisfaction and mystery in every seed. I love the growing as much as the end product. Pay attention to the environment when you set up. Temperature, humidity and ventilation are key. Good luck. relax and enjoy.

...you're welcome man and while i agree that orgaincs is the 'best' way to grow it's not because it gives great flavor because my coco hempy grown bud tastes just as good, no, i think it is the best because, as you say, it is the most 'natural' way to grow.

...but won't you agree that for a noob with no experience, learning to mix and nurture a truly organic living soil might be best delayed until he first learns to grow the plant?

...and while i agree that popping beans in the search for new keepers is wonderful fun, a new person needs first to learn the basic skills that keep a reliably steady supply in place, ie: cloning and bonsai-ing mothers.

...i tried to share a brain-dead easy method to success that even a noob with no experience could follow and reap a respectable harvey their first time off the line, as it were.

...true organic growing is a philosophy more than a method, it's a lifestyle that incorporates nature into the equation and while i try to live that sort of life i personally have found it to be much too difficult to keep a ballanced, living soil in a couple of bins in my second floor apartment.
