Hello

I normally don't post but due to having cancer I would like to share this while I still can.

In the mid 1950's my friend, lets call him John Doe worked in the movie/music business and 1 of his jobs was to help procure refreshments for musicians and actors and on 1 of his trips locating refreshments he came upon a grower who was supposelly the 1st or 1 of the 1st hydro growers in the states.

The system was flood and drain and I have to tried to replicate it on a smaller scale then what my friend John saw. The fill and drain manifold in the pictures were procured from the grower back in the 50's and has sat in storage down in the basement till recently when I decided to retrieve it. That manifold is about 60 yrs old and all the rest of the parts are new.

The system consisted of a reservoir filled with nutes pumped to dual buckets, the outer whiched is plumbed and a inner bucket perferated like a net pot. Nutrients pumped through the 90 degree fitting on the manifold and overflowed through an inner pipe inside of a outer pipe on the manifold that when the nutrients reached a certain height designated by the height of the inner pipe a suction/drain occured and the system basically flushes like a toilet.

You will see in the pics the manifold is on a angle which was able to rotate out of the resorvior for cleaning and nute changes, normally the manifold is in an upright position and the intake was disconnected in the pics for a nute change and may be a little confusing. My friend John does not recall what the farmer used for nutes back then and it was a outside unit. I used flouresents and mh along with dry nutes from a company out of Ohio, along with pea gravel for a medium like the original system used and it took alot of pea gravel that I cleaned and flushed through a strainer.

I'm sure other methods like the BB are the way to go now, I just thought some of you would like to see how it was done 60 yrs ago and sorry if the pics aren't the greatest.

Kick ass man! Old school rules! Keeps people's perspective in check. It's all been done before, and so much of the new fancy stuff really don't mean that much.

Makingoo and others thank you for the kind replies. I really expected some people to say bs that manifold was part of what I really believe was 1 of the 1st hydro grows in the states and I wouldn't blame them. I researched it the best I could but its like trying to find out who scored the 1st touchdown in football, etc. I heard this was the best site on the net and I am finding out that is true.

I bought those tubs and pretty much everything from lowes except for the manifold and the lil giant pump sitting in the rez tub, the other tub isn't attached, its just an additional tub I used to let water sit in for a couple days to aerate in case of chlorine in my tap water. A single tub held enough nutes for 6 buckets. In a couple of those pics you can see the yellow lid that I drilled 2 holes in for intake and drainage.

I ran an marineland emperor 400 aquarium filter not shown in the pics to help areate in both tubs but it was probally not necessary.

I had a little trouble at 1st as I didn't have the right nutes, I ended up running hydro-grow dry nutes from crop king out of Ohio and things really took off and the ph seemed to stabilize right around 6 with my junky pool ph test kit, a digital meter sure would be nice.

Thanks again
Oldschool

It was just bagseed I was using, at the time I was too poor and too paranoid to order seeds. I started them at different times so some are larger then others.

I don't remember but I thought I used an 1/8 or 3/16 drill bit to perforate the inner bucket and had just a couple of pieces of pea gravel that went through to the outer bucket but never made its way back to the rez. I didn't have now where near as many holes as a net pot and deburring all the holes took a while. I did have a little nute sediment that accumalated in the outer bucket that I cleaned out in between grows.

I was able to rotate and move the inner buckets around but they are heavy and was worried about crushing a main root so all I did was rotate as little as needed.

I forgot to mention that I am not endorsing the nutes I used, not sure if it is the best formulation and not sure if the company wants our business, just stating what I used, I just think its silly to pay what they are asking for liquid nutes.

It is hard to tell from the pics but there is a 400 mh along with flourecent, I didn't get any pics when I changed to hps.

These pics are from fall 09 right after I registered here and I read alot here, I am still unclear how thcbay/seeds works, I didn't want to grow from bagseed but I didn't want to do anything thing to get me banned like asking for seeds etc.

I am in up in SE Michigan visiting friends for the labor day weekend and it sure is a change from down south where I live. I like it here except for winter, I take blood thinners for my heart so I get real cold in winter but the thought of being legal is alot to consider.

Also Happy Labor Day weekend to yall and thanks again for letting me be a part of this great community.

hey oldschool, hows the weather up north? i c your beating the heat we have down south. lucky you. ok, thc bay. just like an auction ya go to, ya palce a bid & wait to c if ya won it, or theres allways the buy it now, which is what i do.. after you confirm your bid or buy out. youll get a pm leading you the way to finish up. i love it. personally im a lil leary of seed banks cuz of all the bad rep they get. aka not receving the cash, or just lost seeds. i have not had that problim with the bay,,ever. you should ck it out.
