Wanted to get everyone’s input on a soil mix off. Need to lock down a few ideas: pot size, amending, mix date, bake time, seed splash etc etc. what is everyone’s thoughts here?

I like the competitions, I never grew organic until the gallon challenge.

I'm down for whatever is clever.

Is a month enough time to cook soil?

Never done it before but I have some boxes of starter and seagull guano around.

I want to inoculate some soil, pots going to be steaming.

Pot size will be dependent upon which amendments are allowed, and how often your mix can be amended.

If it is just make soil and water only for comp, you will likely need 7 gallons minimum to make it all the way through without amending, and even then…

If it is single amendments additions only, such as meals or castings, you will need to make sure you have significantly more aeration to your soil to start, as those amendments will “weigh” your mix down, and cause drainage issues the further along in your grow that you get.

Will organic fertilizers be allowed in the initial making of soil, or will it be strictly mineral and media inputs?

I like to cook my soil for at least 30 days, but prefer much longer.

Lastly, there will be a pretty significant barrier to entry for those not currently running living soil, and have to make.

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer. Just things to consider. Depending on timing, I would most likely jump in this “competition/challenge” as well.

I don't want to do a contest, but would like to follow the thread/discussion.

I'm curious to know how "organic soil" will be defined.

so the microbes have a chance to break down the nutrients to make them soluble for the plants

I think the idea is a one time soil mix then water and no amending after the soil mix date cut-off.

I have seen living soil grows in somewhat small containers.

It might be bio availability timing on certain ferts.

This is new to me but I'm not worried about trying something new.

I would suggest any size pot is acceptable but Veg and Flower times are defined in the living soil competition.

My only real ask is that we all send in tissue samples for performance enhancing drug testing.

Being organic is not really that important. I think it would be more about showing how far your mix can carry things.

I have a 160 gallon bed ready to go lol. Won’t need any amendments. I would like this to really show how good soil can do the job without all the fertilizers.
