Last run I tried something else instead of a brush. I put the pollen in a small zip bag, bend a small branch/bud horizontal, and then slide the bag around it, shake it gently, sliding it in and out softly ( ) sort of brushing the pistils against the pollen instead of the other way around, and then remove the zip bag. Fans off of course (for a day), but exhaust still on. Found 60 seeds in that bud, and just a handful in others. The advantage over using a brush is that you can clearly see the pollen, so you spill very little (instead of filling a brush tip), and don't put it in the air while applying.
The pistils will start turning amber/brown and within roughly 24 hours die cause they did their job. Like so:

Later on you can tell by the extra swollen seeded calyxes.
I love finding the seeds on marked branches as they mature and in buds as I smoke em.......such a therapeutic hobbythis is what I did with a few exceptions (a mixed combo from all the replies here.thanks ) I collected male sacs off my male which were just about ready to open...but some were still a but immature. I clipped them off with stems and leaves still attached in hopes that the immature ones would mature "on the vine" sotospeak. I put them all in a good sized plastic sandwich bag and left a small air gap open and stashed it away safely from all my plants. I also popped some dry rice into the bag.
I waited a few days, zipped up the bag completely and shook it around thereby opening up all the pollen sacs and I could clearly see all the fresh yellow pollen inside. I brought in my femal plant and covered the plant with a large trash bag and sealed off the bottom with tape. I left two lower branches exposed. I carefully open the baggie full of pollen and slipped it over the buds, taped her up and gently shook it around and onto the budsites. I took off the bag, tagged the branch and did the same to the other exposed branch. I left the branches exposed to the air and kept the rest of the plants covered by the large trash bag. I'll wait about 6 hours, remove the bag and then rinse everything off. I''ll keep her quarinteened (sp?) for a few days and then return it back to my greenhouse. I think my only concern is that pollen got under the trashbag and into the entire plant and that would suck suck because it was my best BigBud x DubKing plant ( a Lion Genetic strain).
Headed out to do the same thing with best GSC Forum x DK female plant. A bit nerve wracking to say the least...a bit of an adrenaline rush as well. I love messing with the ganja, man...what an exciting plant.
I normaly put my bag on the branch with a slit at the top were I can apply pollen with a brush, tweezers,or a cotton bud, I then tape the slit up,i keep the bag on for 48 to 72 hrs,i then take it out the tent, open slit and spray with waterthen take the bag off, works every time, you must remember that paper should be thin like traceing paper or grease proof paper that's opaque,i take the plant out the tent but in the same room, without getting random seeds, all the best,76My only question is the actual length of time for the pollen to trigger things into seed production. Most of the experienced farmers who posted here (which I trust their knowledge immensely) seem to have a different time frame...anywhere from immediately afterwards to 24 hours. From the method I used (covering up the entire plant with a bag) I worry about increased humidity inside the bag and a longer time frame. I may wait an hour or so and poke a few holes at the top of the bag to help it vent. I probably pull the bag off in a 4 hours and mist her down too.
"Exact or approximate time exposure for cannabis pollen to induce seed production" would be something to explore. If anyone has dug into this deeper, please share...and I am AOK with plain ol' observation aka "anectdotal evidence" from the experienced, well groomed growers.
I may try a different method on the next one..... maybe paintbrushing or Q-tipping a few buds.
Least you should get quite a few seeds,i like to do it so the whole bud turns to seeds, and just the flowers I want to seed too, good luck kola, and remember if the sensi,s ready before the seeds you can take all the branches off except the one with the seeds,i will sometimes do this if I think the seeds aren't mature enough, you can also give a light feed at this point, all the best,76That's a good one too, willy76..ty.
In Jorge Ceventes grow book ( not so sure he's a expert on the topic) he says that the pollen kicks in within minutes but to ensure pollenization leave things exposed for 24 hours. He later states that water de-activates pollen.
Well, I think my experiment worked tremendously well as the two two branches and their buds are shriveled up and the pistels laid down and went brown. I ended up exposing her for 4 hours and IMO overkilled it with pollen. I think I could have used much less. I'll put her in the GH later today and do another one later.
Usually 4 weeks minimum will do it but I prefer nearer 5 on most strains but never less than 4 weeks, you,ll be fine by the sounds of it ,76Thanks will76....yeah I am curious to see what type of finish times the seeds will need. This is another fun learning curve for me.
Sounds a killer x too!76Usually 4 weeks minimum will do it but I prefer nearer 5 on most strains but never less than 4 weeks, you,ll be fine by the sounds of it ,76
I always leave my beans in the buds curing, till i get around to smoking them. Then i throw the beans back with the bud to keep track of origin and keep the lot together till all are harvested/bud is smoked.I found leaving them in the buds to dry\cure for a month at least produced healthier, seeds overall with excellent viability,76
I've found that rice can actually rub the hulls off. I save desiccant packs now.Spread them out on a screen or something to let them dry. Make sure to remove all husks from the seeds. Store them in an air-tight container with dessicant (dry rice works, regular rice not instant) in the fridge.
