Hello all! Does pot size effect yield? In my case i have been running 65 to 200 gal pots, and i think that upping to a 600 will increse plant size and therefore yield. BTW this 600 is huge ten feet across and 35in deep approx

We will see i am shooting and hoping for 3 months of full sun veg, but depending on temps possiably less. The babes are from seed and are 30 days old now, foot tall under T5s. Start acc at the end of april and run supplemental lighting. But i have had a few people say its way to much dirt, that 600 and up are totally execessive. BUT the biggest and best plants i have seen are in the ground, or beds with a open bottom.

Hi,

Trees can have tap roots that go down 10-20 feet. Cannabis roots are mostly in the top 24 inches. The tap root goes down a tiny bit deeper. You want to focus on the feeders that run off the tap.

A 200 gallon pot is pretty big. If you want to increase your yield, start topping and don't quit. Do this with a 600 gallon pot and you'll have a mendo dope type plant. You'll also need a couple 55 gallon water barrels and lots of liquid fertilizer to feed it. You'll be busy watering alone because a big girl can easily drink 30 gallons every 3rd day. Then you have to start tying those branches down. The cage will be a big job as will cleaning up undergrowth to keep the air circulating. And foliar feeding is important as well. A big plant is a lot of work.

Just filling that 600 pot is a huge job. Did you cook some soil for it yet? It takes about 28 days for the supersoil to calm down enough that it won't hurt your plant. You have time, but start it now.

Good luck.

Oh yeah! You know it, i got that baby all filled up with tons of really nice compost, and loaded plenty of ammendments into it. In so far as food, i am hoping to get away with rocking different teas. Kelp meal, neem meal, alfalfa pellets and of course compost tea. I also imagine i will have to lay on some cold pressed hydrolosate

I don't think that using the huge container will help any more than a 40 gallon container unless you are trying to grow a massive redwood indoors. A plant DOES like a lot of root room, but beyond a certain size, it isn't going to help anything. If you really want to know the biggest size container you need, plant something in the big container, and at the end of the grow, carefully dissect the medium to see how far the roots have extended. Anything that the roots haven't ventured into is just excess space that isn't being used by the plant.

Well the theory i am basing this on is that the more volume of dirt the more microbial activity is present, thru the exchange of the living soil food web a much higher availability of nutrient to the plant. Even if the roots do not extend to the edges, dont the fungi and bacteria convert and transfer? I am rocking cover crops, living mulch and organic soil, and lots of AACT. Of course this is outdoors, i have some 200 gal smarties and some 250 gal raised beds that will be ran side by side. And yes a redwood with pineapples and berries is the goal lol

Good thinking, but the bacterial benefits don't really transfer throughout the medium. It can help where the roots are available to uptake the nutrients, but the bacteria don't move around and any benefits from their action is lost if the roots can't get to it. The roots only grow to a certain size, unlike goldfish in a giant tank!

600 for 1 plant? I think 300 is as big as you need to go if you start early, you need to support XL plants. Humboldt Local was getting 10 lbs or more in his 300's.

That was like a few weeks ago, they are well over a foot, seed plants of course. Still got another month veg inside then three months outside. HL thread was SICK!!! i also checked out Jorges video. The real question is what and how often did they get fed? Just like mendo dope killing it in 600 and 1000 gal pots; but not really telling us the food. I digress.... i am going to put not the biggest baddest one i have into it(have like 200 right now, 100 after sex....) but a baby more average so i can compare to my 250 and 200 side by side.

All rightey then! Here we go with my next update, babes are rocking put em in some 3 gallon grow bags, they were 5 gallon bags i purchased then cut to make a shorter wider soil base than the 3 gal grow bags are. Been using water, a few kelp neem teas and a few enzyme teas. No real food yet, in a week or two i will get on some fish hydrolysate and hopefully some microbial extrapolation. I used the mix thats in my big pots to make sure that not only my dirt is good but to acclimate them to their final soil base. Biggest one is a Purple Squerkle coming in at 22in right now, most are over a foot. Some genes like the Purple kush x WW and the G14 are shorter because of genetic. Squat and strong with leaves getting bigger than my hands. Debating doing some LST on the larger ones. Some bamboo and green tape to tie em down. Getting close to 4/20 and hopefully going outside weather provided. Have all dirt built for final soil bases, 300 gal raised beds some 150 and 200 smarties as well as the one 600. Planting some clover now as we speak, get that cover crop rockin!! Will post some pics of the final garden soon, the 300-350gal"smart pots" made with FREE coffee sacks are looking badder than f*ck!!!

I wonder tho, not a single AACT put on them? I reckon after years of rocking it in the same space your dirt should be fully loaded with all the bennies and fungi needed. No topdressings of amendments or any homemade compost or EWC? also tho those trenches had unlimited soil space, beyond the size dug and back filled those roots were hangin out with the red woods. He is the man, wish i could pick ganja d's brain for a few hours lol. HL is as inspiring as it gets, i am planting lots of flowers and veggies, putting up good stuff to help pollinators. Also building a bug bump with plants focused on attracting beneficial bugs running the entire length of the hoop house.

Thanks man, just a few T5s daisy chained.. Wish i had a legit hoop house or a buncha 1000 watt hps, but oh well plants love the tech lights for vegging. hopefully they dont get to mad when we go outside. And about the roots your most def right, the majority of root mass of cannabis is feeder roots, found in the top 10 inches. It makes sense because the majority or biological activity is in the top few inches.

Yes he was buying copious amounts of tea as well. Pleasant Valley Farms Brix Mix for foliar feeding as well. Can't remember if he was using calcium 25 I know Tom Hill liked to use it.

I would love to know more about Tom Hill! and i imagine they made the tea, i guess up on the left coast there are tons of people relatively close who would totally sell you a batch of tea. I mean damm, the one garden they did half 707 and half Black Gold.....i wish yo! i am out here with a mixer, smashing lava rock with a sledge!
Were about to find out!!! Some dont think so, but i doubt their conclusion has come from experience lol

First pic is in 200 gallons
Second is 400 gallons.
Huge difference in my yields by almost double.
