im just wondering if a wetting agent added to soil/mix make it stay wetter longer ? i use the pro mix premium that you buy at wal mart and it has a wetting agent mixed with it . i use 3 gallon pots and can water my plants with 1/4 a gallon of water and i can go 7 day or longer before watering again . i have been growing for 2 years now and still can not get my watering to every 3 or 4 days like you guys say you do and im wondering if the weting agent they add to this stuff is some how making it stay wetter longer

I don't see how that answers my question it just says there bad . Which makes me wonder since I used this the last 3 or 4 grows u never said anything about it moisture control soils being bad it was mostly how I was watering

Y'all say ya water every every 3 or 4 days and use 2 or 3 times more water then me and after 2 years I still can't replicate it and can not see where I'm going wrong I just must be 1 dumb son of bitch

What type of pots? Plastic, fabric etc? I use that product regularly when I don't feel like making the drive to the garden store and don't have any issues with them staying wet or over watered. I don't notice any difference between it and the Lambert pro-mix I use.

I use it in fabric pots from one gallon up to 65 gallon both inside and out and end up watering every other day or so. My smaller 10 gallon containers will get a couple gallons each watering for example.

It may be a container / aeration / drainage issue?

There's a diff between basic potting mixes and the HP or BX mix you can buy, you're not growing roses

I told you a long time ago I thought it was bad, you must have forgot.


You might not ever need to flush if you water between feedings. I saw that promix at walmart. Scary looking stuff @ 90% peat. Some of them moisture control soils also have little watering retaining blocks that work great for house plants but not good for weed. I hope you added a ton of perlite.

Same here in 3 gal pots I go through water faster in the fab pots than my old plastic tubs but I like how the roots grow through the soil in fabric, they hug the sides and wrap the bottom in plastic. They take 2.5 - 3 days to dry in the summer heat and 3-4 days through the rest of the year...5 gal I get a bit more time.

Yes, a wetting agent will help reduce evaporation, but in my humble opinion adding some good mycorrhizae and beneficial bacteria to the medium will help reduce your watering needs and improve overall nutrient uptake at the same time. Try "Xtreme Gardening" Mykos, Azos, and Versity Bacillus Blend. They're reasonably priced, (easy to reproduce if you want, as well) and it's good stuff. But any brand works.

i rem this a lil bit i was thinking about trying a 50/50 perlite / pro mix this time

Ouch,it's still $22 here. Promix went up over 50 now. I'm practicing growing in 1 gal cocoloco bags. If all goes well, I can make 2oz ea. That's using bottle nutes. I don't think I could pull it off with the dry amendments. That's 2lbs bud per bag cocoloco. I'm using the old stuff outside.

Promix is about $35Cdn 3.8cu/ft compressed bale....Sunshine mix, Greenworld VPW30 are bit cheaper when its available. I get about 15 grows per bag in 3 gal pots....VPW30 already has 30% perlite in it but I'll add about 15% more to the others as they state they have just 17 - 20%

well its not 50 a bag here i found a place that has it in stock for 26.99 for 1.5 cubic ft ffof but i have used fox farm ocean forest on like my first 2 or 3 grows i was still having the same watering situation

what ratio would you suggest on the pro mix / perlite i have now im about to mix a new bale i know i can get 5 3 gallon pots out of 1 bale i am thinking close to 50/50 promix/perlite this time

I add about 15% more perlite to the promix, It comes with 17 - 20% in it so I did the math and for a 30% mix that I find works the best. Add some worm castings or not and I'm good. So after dumping my Promix into a tub to mix, prewet and add supplements I guesstimate 15%. I get a lot more than 5 pots from 1 bale.....more like 15 from the 3.8 cu/ft compressed bales in 3 gallon pots...
