Also take a look at the many articles about outdoor hemp being grown in Canada, Australia, Europe, etc. One interesting thing will be that some plants are grown for fiber, some for flowers, some for fuel, so the processing part of it comes into account. Ruderalis strains can be grown year round for hemp (they are not dependent on photo period and tolerant of more extreme temperatures).

Water used from ponds stocked with fish is large scale aquaculture.

Right now aquaponically cultivated cannabis is still in its infancy. If I thought we'd have room in our new aquaponics system I'd be growing out at least one cannabis plant in it. Unfortunately, growing space is at a premium there, so mine is still going to be cultivated in soil. I use a fraction of the amount of water the vast majority of growers use, so that would make my experience an anomaly.

Nutrient usage depends on method and style of growing, EG organic vs conventional methods. Then you've got a different beast with growers in the first place because we/they don't do things the way most farmers do. Many seem to feel that if you're spending top dollar on equipment and nutrients, you're doing best by those plants, never once realizing that they're paying for diluted ag ferts. Fortunately more and more are coming to learn this is the case.

There's a lot to say about this whole thing. Is this going to be your thesis?

This is for a research paper for my Senior english class. I am an entrepreneurship major so no senior thesis required! With that I am also doing this research for my own benefit as I plan on going into this after college.

I have found little information on cannabis grown aquaponically and is leading me to make assumptions based information from aquaponically grown herbs and vegetables. I have been reading that growing cannabis aquaponically is especially tricky because of the nutrient requirements of the plant.
Any thoughts there?

I am trying to remove the human element as much as possible and make generalizations on growing methods. If the plant got exactly what it needed, when it needed it, what method is the best (for the climate of the region).

Honestly, my thoughts are it's just a matter of time before we get it right. Cannabis cannot be all that different from all other terrestrial plants, I refuse to believe that. There are a lot of closed minds among growers, people who only go by what their friend told them, or the dude in the hydro shop, that sort of thing, instead of going to science and drawing corollaries where they properly exist.

That said, I'm pretty sure there's no way I'm going to have room in our aquaponic system to start my own experiments.

You know that cannabis (or hemp) is considered suitable for soil remediation, yes?

I had a long talk with John Kempf about soil remediation and cannabis. He also has prophetic dreams about regrowing desert areas into rain forests, and I told him cannabis is the only what that dream will come true.
