Is there any advantage to snipping off the buds that were previously growing but have grinded to a halt, or should I go ahead and leave them be? And what are the chances of returning it to flower by significantly increasing the dark period? Probably a dumb question but I have no idea

Not unless you wanted to make clones, besides that I don't see any benefit. If you want to grow it out for the experience, and to see what happens do it up.
