Is there anything benefit or harm by using RODI water (Reverse Osmosis De-ionized Water)? I'm a old salt water reef keeper so I have a top of the line RODI filter.

Nobody has an opinion on RODI water? I know that the RO is good, but what about the DI side of it?

i would think that the de-ionized part of it could present problems to your plants but that's just a guess...

RODI is ok to use for plants but you'll need a steady feeding regimen including all micro nutrients (calcium and magnesium especially). RODI filtration removes all minerals and micronutrients that would normally be found in tap water or rain water. I use it all the time, I buy water from a "water store" which has the giant RODI filters. The water taste great and my plants love it (but they also suck up cal and mag).

de-i is cation exchange resin. Simple terms it swaps left over metals and exchanges them for salts. (do a little research) Usually at the end of the r.o in final stage water scrubbing, so its a fairly minor amount. Great for aquarium use and drinking water, not so great for growing. Btw, the negative cation reaction does not show these salts on a tds meter.(not sure why, but I assume its because they are still charged for a while) I used de-i and my experience was horrible. Soon as I removed the de-i my plants stopped locking out. I will also say if your pre water is 200+ppm from tap, vs 50 ppm from tap, the less you will utilize the de-i portion. This is why some growers report no issue and others do. Also some tap has way more metals than others causing a higher charge rate thus causing nute issue. Again, not sure why.

Just test a few plants with it and see, or bypass it FTW.

BTW, im a reefer too. I just moved my de-i portion over to my sump topoff, pre-float valve. Works like a champ.

Hey, I got some ro water from the local aquatic shop and he gave me it from the fish tank instore, is that okay to use in my hydro?

from what i found out..dionized water makes it bond more easy to the salt ...the explanation i got is that rodi will make the nutes like super strengh, cause the way the water will try to bond with the nutes..and could cause problems in a bad way...for the record this is what i was told..only r/o unless you are reefing.

Okay. Cheers, I've literally just put the germinated seeds in rockwool and in then in the hydro system. Haven't added nutes yet as I don't know how many litres in tank.

I would ask if they ever treated with any medicines at all. Could be super bad, OR super nice...

R.o is super pure water and excellent for garden use. in fact its one of the best because it has no salts whatsoever, and you can start to calculate ur own preferred actual salt values for feeding programs since you are starting with 0 ppms.

What you are talking about tattoojim, is de-I water. De-i is cation exchange resin, how it works is, it exchanges solids in the un-purified water for salts. (few ro-s include a de-i cartridge but not all, they charge additional for reefkeepers) Salts are a no-no for garden use, since we dont have a actual reference on what these salts are and how plentiful they may be. Nothing actually bonds to these after the cation exchange takes place "inside" the de-i cartridge. The nutes do not become super strength, just out of range. If you sent in a water sample then you could build a feeding program. since we dont know if these damn salts are cal, mag, etc...if you had too much mag and then added more mag per instructions, you could have excess issues.... Thats the simple version.

Thanks the guy just said it was ro. Nothing else. But I didn't think to ask when I saw it coming from a fish tank.The ph is 6.5. One plant is 2cm and only put them in a day ago. I'm also not sure what neuts to add, I have a few that the company sent me when I bought my tent.

First determine if you need one. If ur water is 150ppm or less of tds then I wouldnt worry about it.
Just keep your ph in a safe range after you mix nutes before watering.

If you want total control, look at ur cities water report and determine how much chlorine or chloramines is added.. You can let it sit out over night if its only chlorine. If its chloramines then a simple carbon and prefilter will help. Available at any pimp depot or loweski's...

If its high ppm's, get the highest amt of flow you can afford with a simple prefilter, carbon, and r.o membrane. You can use ebay and look at h2osplash units for 79-99 that are 50gpd and 3 stage. R.o membrane, carbon, and sediment...thats all you need. Get the auto shutoff valve, then it wont keep running waste water!

Bulk reef supply has a 4 stage ro only system, 75gpd unit for 123.99 that is very simple and works well. They also sell the simple auto shutoff kit with a float valve for 23.99. Its a buck fifty but that would be a very high quality easy setup to get 75 gallons per day...

so after speaking to the water company im 330ppm calcium carbonate and 130 ppm calcium..any tips? im using a hydro by the way and the ph is starting to rise, plants are only a few cm so im unsure what neuts to use.
