Hi all.

New to hydroponic growing and would like some advice on a potential issue.

Plant is around 2 weeks in and overall looks healthy, except I have noticed slight discoloration to the roots.

Usually they have been bright white, but today on checking they seem to have brown stained colour.

Is this the start of root rot, or is it because I changed the water yesterday and it's just staining from the nutrient solution?

Sorry for the flickering lights.

Thanks.

My roots turn a bit brown during flower because of the nutrients. Once a week I fill with PH water. Helps use up the stored nutrients in the roots. As long as your foliage looks good I wouldn't worry too much. Hope it helps!

You can always spray the roots with some diluted hydrogen peroxide and see if it foams up. Foaming indicates root rot.

To me it just looks like stained roots. I use GH 3-part nutrients and it stains my roots.

Do you use beneficial microbes or you going sterile?

Peroxide spray will kill your bennies, but you can obviously lift the plant out of your reservoir, spray with h2o2 for the test, then spray with your current reservoir solution to dilute out all the h2o2 so your bennies are not killed off (at least not as many). Then after 24 hours or so give it a small dose of bennies to help repopulate.

Otherwise, if you are going sterile, you can just add some h2o2 directly into your reservoir solution. As your system oxygenates the water, it helps break down the h2o2, so you need to add a bit every so often on a sterile system.

Edit: You will also be able to smell root rot. Normal reservoir should have very little smell, or even a slight mildewy smell (like damp clothing). Stronger smells would indicate root rot. Rotten egg (sulfur) smell is definitely root rot.

@THCosmic good call on the smell, I've never had it personally, I did meet a grower late 90's that definitely had it. Yer right it will smell.

Thanks all for the advice.

I'm thinking it's not rot ( no smell or slime )

I have bought h202 which I will use to clean in-between runs and as a test as suggested. I've also bought some TNC MycorrHydro which I am going to start using from tomorrow.
