roy dominated class for the whole 90z so much he finally had to go to the heavyweights to get beat up.....all his loses were past his prime fights.. remeber watching him collect all the belts from the whole lightheavy weight division and making them all look like golden gloves 12 year olds

Joe Calzaghe is a great fighter no doubt, one of the best ever, some would even say the best.

Although when the two of them fought it was like 2009.

After that first loss to Tarver back around 2003 Jones never really got back to form.

I enjoy watching Jones, he really puts on a show and to me he is the more enjoyable/exciting boxer of the two, but just barley.

Joe Calzaghe is the FUCKING MAN - literally the best ever in that class - retired undefeated after trashing EVERYONE. I saw him land an 18+ punch combo on Jeff Lacy - ended Lacy's up-and-coming status after he won the silver at the olympics.

I always wanted Joe to drop a weight class, Mayweather to go up a weight class, and to see those fists fly!

Joe Calzaghe is the FUCKING MAN - literally the best ever in that class - retired undefeated after trashing EVERYONE. I saw him land an 18+ punch combo on Jeff Lacy - ended Lacy's up-and-coming status after he won the silver at the olympics.

I always wanted Joe to drop a weight class, Mayweather to go up a weight class, and to see those fists fly!

same here :) that would have been an amazing fight, although I think calzaghe would have pulled off the win

He consistently threw over 100 punches around at over 40% accuracy... he usually landed twice as many as his opponents threw!

it would have been nice to see roy and him fight in there prime....or atleast roys. i had to go check wikipedia to see there stats as i stopped watching boxing i the early 2000 kinda when bernard hopkins showed back up.... seems joe prime was right about when roy i think said he was retiring the first time ,when he could not find anyone to fight and then went and tried to do the heavy weight thing,,,,,Roy like alot when offered that few millions for another fight kept coming back... should have just let ita go about 2001,,, but id do the same 4-5 million to do what you love ehh who can blame um!!!

his legend might be tarnished but m sure his 80 kids will enjoy the inhertance.....plus he got almost 3 times more fights then joe......diffrent decades

No doubt - they're totally different boxers - Jones was a slick counterpuncher with some of the best footwork in the game, Calzaghe was a volume/work-rate fighter who had fantastic angles.

just read their wiki profiles, they started around the same time. went pro around the same time, both had over a 100 fights as amatures, Joe ended at 42-0 Jones 54-8

Joe is three years younger than Jones.

I think going out on top is the way to leave, Jones lost 5 of his last 7:(

90z joe was fighting guys behind the pub for free beer and a bag of potatos , roy was collecting, defending and unifying like 3 weight classes and on hbo,,,,,,every 3 months big money purses..... I never heard or saw joe on any pay perview in the 90z or early 2000..

just seems his career heated up in the last 10 years where roys been tearing him self down

well the quantity of great fighters Joe fought is nowhere near thequantity of high caliber fighers Roy fought.

Roy had many more accomplishments in his career than Joe as well.

I saw in one of the interviews just a bit ago, Joe said it himself that he never really got a lot of big fights, he was talking about his fight with roy like he had fought him in his prime.
When joe fought roy he had lost 3 of his last 6 fights. Roy was nowhere near his prime went they battled. I think roy beats joe if they had fought in there hayday.

Joe is sorta like a floyd mayweather just doesnt take the big fights that he might loose,

Calzaghe had a hard time crossing over to US audiences until he defeated Lacy. He actually didn't fight on any US TV until the Lacy fight, and the only reason he was on that one was Lacy was the Light Heavyweight "promising up-and-comer" of the moment After that fight, they set up the Manfredo fight for US audiences (HBO), and then Kessler (Showtime). Only after he'd proven his popularity in those did they bring him across the pond to fight - he beat Hopkins in his Vegas premiere, then finally got RJJ in MSG.

The crazy thing is he won his first championship in 95, his second in 97, and defended it for 10 YEARS before Lacy came along & US promoters took notice.

The politics of the boxing world are a fascinating sport in and of themselves - different fighting styles are perceived as more or less popular in different countries and smart promoters book for the fans. Calzaghe was never seen as a big knockout puncher, which is the name of the game for Vegas crowds - or a particularly tough brawler (which Atlantic City crowds favor) - so he was perceived as having no market value for American audiences.
